Mission: To explore and perform great music of the 20th and 21st centuries by: commissioning new works; building and developing relationships with world-class composers; maintaining a special interest in performing works by oregon and pacific northwest composers; and offering performances of the highest artistic quality. To promote the education and advancement of young composers by: teaching, mentoring, and fostering the next generation of composers from 6th to 12th grade; providing workshops and rehearsals with professional musicians performing their compositions; and presenting a public concert and recording of their works.
Programs: February 2, 2013 the alberta rose theater penelope - a song cycle by sarah kirkland snider about the concert penelope is a song cycle by composer sarah kirkland snider, with lyrics by playwright ellen mclaughlin, featuring vocalist shara worden of my brightest diamond. Inspired by homer's epic poem, the odyssey, penelope is a meditation on memory, identity, and what it means to come home. each year aspiring young composers from oregon and washington have precisely that opportunity. Under the direction of pianist and conductor jeff payne, the young composers project is dedicated to developing the next generation of composers. During the school year, through a series of workshops and a performance, the ycp gives students the opportunity to compose their own music and work with a professional ensemble rehearsing and performing that piece. Participating students have won a lengthy list of awards including state, regional and national honors. Kbps classical radio has annually broadcast interviews with some of the composers along with their pieces and segments of the workshop have been featured on oregon public broadcasting's "artbeat. " students have participated in master classes with pulitzer prize winning composer william bolcom, and indiana university faculty member david dzubay.
