Mission: We provide familiies of children with special needs emotional and educational support, assistance in accessing community services, and promote family centered practices in the southeastern region on north carolina.
Programs: New hanover county schools exceptional children project (nhcs/ec) this project ran from july 1, 2016 to june 30, 2017. With these funds, the taxpayer hosted several workshops in new hanover county to help parents better understand the federal special education law idea and how to be an equal team member at their child's individualized education planning (iep) meeting. Three staff persons are funded in this contract to work with new hanover county parents to better understand their child's iep and evaluations and attend school meetings with the parent. Over one hundred parents were served.
supporting families who have children with special needs (dss) this project ran from july 1, 2016 to june 30, 2017 this funding comes from the nc department of social services to the family support program at the university of north carolina at chapel hill. The taxpayer writes grant proposals and enters into a subcontract agreement for these funds. With these funds, the taxpayer engages in collaborative activities with organizations and agencies in the southeastern region and statewide. This includes joint projects to serve parents of children with special needs, attending nc icc quarterly meetitngs to fulfill govenor appointment, serving on the north carolina department of public instruction exceptional children's advisory council, etc. They provided 50 families with information about local resources and/or disability related issues individually. They provided at least 10 parent-to-parent mentor matches to support one another around disablity issues.
early intervention collaboration project (eicp) this project ran from july 1, 2016 to june 30, 2017. This is a contract with the new hanover county health department and the taxpayer directly. The funds for this project are from the cape fear memorial foundation. This project includes 1 licensed counselor from the new hanover county health department and 1 credentials triple p stepping stones - positive parenting program - specialist from the taxpayer. In this project, the taxpayer provided intensive in home services to parents who have a child ages birth to five diagnosed with a special need or behavioral issue. This is a collaboration between the health department's care coordination for children project and the taxpayer in order to provide more families support than they would otherwise receive. Referrals for this project come from local counselor agencies, new hanover department of social services, schools, and care coordination for children. Taxpayer saw 40 families in the project.
