Mission: The fair housing center of metropolitan detroit, fhcmd, a non profit, tax exempt citizen based organization, was established in april 1977 for the purpose of addressing fair housing issues in the metropolitan detroit area,. Fhcmd seeks to assure equal access to housing without discrimination that is in violation of federal, state or local laws.
Programs: The fhcmd serves the counties of wayne, oakland and macomb, comprising approximately 40 of michigans poplulation. On september 27, 2017, the fhcmd celebrated its 40-year anniversary, receiving letters of appreciation and support by community leaders, including u. S, senator gary c. Peters, michigan governor rick snyder, and oakland county executive l. Brooks patterson. During the fiscal year, the fhcmd processed approximately 222 complaints and trained and educated approximately 3,000 housing providers and individuals.
in addition to radio and television appearances, fhcmd made fair housing education appearances at the city of southfield public librarygeneral public monthly to all new employees of the village green management company fenton management neighborhood legal services staff lectrac management dhs management rivers management and ralph bunche cooperative. We also conducted outreach to and training for new co-operating attorneys in two locations - southfield and grand rapids mi. Our newletter was issued in both an e-mail edition and hard copy that was mailed to over 8,000 addresses. We had over 222 active case investigations and settled 2 lawsuits.
in addition to its enforcement activities, the center has always used education and outreach as a method to educate the general public and members of the real estate industry on the law, updates to the law and hot topics. During this reporting period several topics have garnered attention. They are criminal records and its impact on housing, sexual harassment in housing and occupancy standards particularly as it impacts families with children protected under the law. Our facebook page has over 1,200 viewers and covers stories that impact the metropolitan area.
