Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Historical Organizations, History Museums, Museums

Mission: In the 1970s, a local historian discovered that a little farmhouse on the banks of the Winooski River was, unbeknownst to anyone, the 1785 home of Ethan Allen, Revolutionary War hero and Vermont's most famous son. After a decade of restoration and the construction of an education center with exhibitions, classrooms and sound and light show, the Homestead opened to the public as a historic site and museum. Today, 13,000 people participate in the Homestead's education programs each year, discovering for themselves how Vermont was settled and the Native, French and English groups who settled the Green Mountain State.
