Also they promote organic farming and anti substance drive for better family values.

"A dollar a day keeps Illiteracy away!" - as an active volunteer and chapter President of Ekal Vidyalaya, when start my campaign or talk with this talk line, the listeners are all puzzled and curious to know how this is possible. Our star package to prospective donors is "A $365 USD contribution can support a School with 30 children for an entire year!" with a positive impact on 30 families. Invoking a idea of affordability of dollar and what it can do in the lives of needy, I stress and indicate what we can buy from a dollar in our day to day life; such as a burger, a cup of coffee etc. and emphasize what a dollar a day can bring the change in the life of needy. Then I lead the conversation with the information - Ekal is able to maintain schools at such a low cost because it works with a low overhead and is supported by local villagers who work shoulder to shoulder with Ekal. This introduction has brought immense results for me in making the people to realize the importance of education and how they can be part of the journey Ekal making a difference to the lives of many needy children in the rural and tribal villages of India.

I have been a donor of Ekal for many years and there are a few unique things about Ekal. Their sole focus is villages in India and their ground presence is so vast in all corners of India.

I my self visited EKAL schools in remote villages around Manthani and Bhupalpalli area in Telangana. I am really amazed to see just a $1/day can bring positive change so many individuals (most of them are women) working as teachers in Ekal system. This is in addition core goal of the Ekal i.e. educating little kids with basic education. I first hand played with these kids in two schools. I am so glad that I came to know about this charity and became a proud school donor. Congratulations to Ekal.

Since I became volunteer after several years as a donor I made several trips to Bharat at 10 different states and met hundred of kids getting primary education and villagers getting help to grow and consume nutritional vegetables and fruit. I have been with Ekal Vidhyalay for over 20 years. I joined as a supporter that quickly turned into donor and after a couple of years as a donor, have been an active volunteer. I support this organization because of the grass root level work and impact it has in rural and tribal villages in India. I have seen the education EVOLVE with changing needs of time and demand. It started with education alone that has now transformed into Integrated village development projects providing wholistic development of the entire area. I am traveling through Uttarakand currently and seeing first hand how inaccessible public schools can be for children. Distance, terrain such as mountains here , weather such as torrential downpours , etc etc. making it extremely hard to get to a school. The children all work or have tasks in the fields too. Remember those days when none, not even government, could do much in remote areas, because of the terrain. At such time Ekal volunteers used to reach villages after villages, trekking the last few kms walking or by cycles. The whole idea was to reach education to the villagers with a firm believe that Empowerment will come only then.
Today, the environment has changed a lot and with this the working of Ekal has adopted new verticals to work on, to empower the needy in rural Bharat that is India.

I have visited many villages to see Ekal schools as well as have visited a GRC ( Gramothan Resource Center) to see work done by Ekal in the villages. These schools provide education to many children who otherwise will not be able to learn basics of communication.
The GRC provides tailoring schools for younger youths provides them with training so they can be self dependent.
Most Ekal officials are volunteers and they work for free!!

In the past I have donated to small & big amounts (of course relative to my income) to many charities/individual gofund raisers....here in US and India. I actually did some study to see what my money accomplished. Some times it fed Children and seniors for days/weeks or provided tuition or books for high school level kids in urban areas. But ekal is different, ekal runs schools in remote areas.. I visited two schools that I have been supporting and I saw 20+ small kids in each school. I actually got a chance to meet couple of parents. There is no way they would send these kids to another school.....because there is no other school near by and these kids can't walk to next village. If the ekal school wasn't there these kids grow without school and once they turn 10years or so...they can walk to school in next village but by the time they are behind and will sure to drop out.

My daughter& I do fund raising for this wonderful organization. They help to reach education to villages in India without spending money on the infrastructure. It solely goes to a teacher , sometimes classes are held under a tree. I believe this is the best gift we can give to children to remove poverty.

I found out about Ekal Vidyalaya in 2014. I was absolutely impressed with their mission which is centered around empowerment and self-reliance through education. More importantly every volunteer is dedicated to the cause thus ensuring that admistrative costs are kept as low as possible.

Their model of "one dollar per day runs one school for one year" is impressive - imagine it costs more to buy an ipad than it costs to run one school!
