Mission: At Eastside College Preparatory School we are committed to opening new doors for students historically underrepresented in higher education. Our challenging and engaging curriculum enables students to discover their intellectual strengths, sharpen their academic skills, and embrace new opportunities in a culture of learning that supports the potential of every student to enter and succeed in a four-year college and beyond. Eastside students who are the first in their families to go to college create a ripple effect, changing their own lives, the lives of their families, and the life of their community.
Results: 100% of Eastside graduates have been admitted to four-year colleges, including Bowdoin College, M.I.T., Georgetown University, Stanford University, Yale University, U.C. Santa Cruz and Wesleyan University.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 250 students and 350 alumni
Programs: Ever since East Palo Alto’s only high school closed in 1976, all high school students had been bused out of their own community to schools in neighboring, more affluent communities. Through the placement process, these students were assigned to non-college track classes. The results were dramatic: students from East Palo Alto dropped out of high school at the alarming rate of 65%. Of the 35% who did graduate, less than 10% enrolled in four-year colleges.
Eastside is an independent secondary school founded in 1996 to turn back this tide that each year caused hundreds of young people to see their life choices narrow dramatically. Originally founded to prepare students for four-year colleges and universities, at Eastside today we are committed to supporting our students through college and in their transition to professional careers.
To achieve our mission we ask a lot of our students --99% of whom are first-generation college bound-- and our faculty. All students sign a contract pledging their dedication to succeed by attending school each day, completing their homework to the best of their abilities, and seeking help as needed. In return, our faculty is committed to teach, encourage, and inspire our students. The school day begins at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm, and includes tutorial periods during which students can receive one-on-one help from their teachers and tutors. Our three-year college readiness program, summer session, residential program, and alumni and career pathways program all provide critical layers of support that enable our students to meet the expectations of our challenging college preparatory curriculum and succeed in college and beyond. A culture of mutual respect and admiration has grown up between students and faculty, creating a positive environment in which students become active participants in their own educational and personal growth.
I have been involved with Eastside for several years now and have been a student sponsor for the last five. I can honestly say that this has been one of the most satisfying things I have ever done. The first student I sponsored is now in college. When I met her she was a shy girl who could not imagine that she'd move very far from home. Now she is a confident young lady with big aspirations who is going to college at an east coast university ... 3,000 miles from home. She is there, the first person in her family to go to college, because of her hard work, the unrelenting dedication and passion of the Eastside staff, and the energy and support of her fellow Eastside students. For me, it was a joy to be able to participate in her success at Eastside and beyond and see that every dollar I spent was making something amazing happen. I encourage you to talk to someone at Eastside or visit the school and experience the uniqueness of the place. I don't doubt if you do you will want to support the efforts of the students and staff as I have.
My husband and I got involved with Eastside College Preparatory School about ten years ago through hearing some of the student's "stories" from neighbors who discovered Eastside through Founder Chris Bischof's "story".
It is the best investment we have ever made! The staff and the students are the most dedicated, motivated and appreciative you will meet.
I particularly love the statistic that the attendance rate hovers around 98% and has since Eastside's inception. This is where these young people want to be.
Every graduating Senior has gone off to a four year University or college. Eastside College Prep sets the highest standards and Eastside students meet the challenge.
Roger and I have been blessed to be able to meet and interface with the students we sponsor and the staff that believes in them when not many in our community have. We have yet to be disappointed in any of our many experiences at Eastside.
Step on the Eastside Campus and feel the hope.
Eastside students and staff deserve your help. You will not regret it!
