Causes: Down Syndrome, Health
Mission: The mission of down syndrome association of houston is to provide programs and support to individuals with down syndrome, their families, and the professionals who serve them, and to create awareness in the community through advocacy, education, and medical outreach. We envision a community in which all people with down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance the quality of their lives, realize their life aspirations, and become accepted as a part of our very diverse society.
Geographic areas served: Greater Houston and Galveston
Programs: Utilize resource center facilities to develop and deliver educational, social development, respite, and occupational training programs for persons with down syndrome, parents, and their families and friends; develop and deliver educational programs for computer literacy, arts and crafts,zumba, music fundamentals, and reading; monthly meetings and periodic conferences dealing with educational, theraputic, and medical issues,sibling relationships, lifetime care and waiver programs. . . Engage in social and recreational programs - annual buddy walk festival, club 21, campability, mardigras, go hawaiian, end of summer and fiesta dances, karaoke night for teens and adults, christmas disco, summer pool and christmas parties, game night and sleepovers, picnic in the park, exercise and outdoor programs - camp for all, gymboree, zumba classes, athletic programs and special olympics training. . . Family respite programs - mother's coffee, acoustic night.
publish and distribute monthly newsletter with contributions by members as well as prominent educational psychologists, therapists, and scientists. Maintain a circulating reference library.
organize and sponsor outreach programs to help physicians, therapists, social workers and educators engage in successful strategies to deal with health, social, and educational issues of persons with down syndrome. Sponsor community outreach programs and events. Created a web presence to increase public awareness and serve as a resource for persons dealing with down syndrome issues issues. Develop outreach and diversity programs in community groups throughout the metropolitan area to make resources known and available and to encourage participation in activities by families with family members who have down syndrome. Deliver "new parent baskets" to greet and connect with new parents of infants with down syndrome in area hospitals. Support and participate in world down syndrome day.
