Mission: Organization douglass community association (the "organization") seeks to ensure that effective , efficient, and quality opportunities in behavioral health, recreation, and youth and family development are available on the northside of kalamazoo. The organization is supported through public contributions, grants and program service contract revenue.
Programs: Youth and recreational programs focus is on physical, academic, and social growth by capitalizing on the many learning opportunities we have with the large numbers of children who participate in our after school programs. Programming includes seasonal recreational sports programs which help children experience belonging and ownership, learn discipline, develop self-worth and quality relaionships with adults and peers and experience enjoyment and success; study tables which provide time -and support for completing homework assignments, and various literacy opportunities that are aligned with kalamazoo public schools standards and programs.
the frederick douglass recovery center behavioral health services are provided with the belief that all individuals have strengths they can build on, the right to be treated with dignity and respect, unique needs, the capacity to find solutions and the ability to make choices and accept responsibilities. Services include individual and group counseling and case management to help patients understand their current health status, what they can do about it and why those treatments are important. The recovery center has a multi-cultural, bilingual, master-level staff dedicated to holistic treatment, working cooperatively as a team with clients to ensure quality services.
across ages substance abuse prevention program focus is on enhancing the resiliency of children in order to promote positive development and prevent involvement in high risk behaviors . Adults serve as mentors for 4th through 3th grade students. Mentors and students are encouraged to participate in bi-monthly service learning projects and recreational activities. Children participate in life skills training to help them resist peer pressure, gain self-esteem, help others, stay out of fights and away from drugs.
rental income and facilities in addition to housing the recovery center and the offices of the organization, the building owned by the organization also rents space to several other non-profit entities including a branch of the kalamazoo public library . The building serves as a community center for the northside of kalamazoo and space is available for local community meetings and events.
