Mission: Cypress Gardens was developed by the Kittredge family in the 1920s and later owned and operated by the City of Charleston. In 1996 Berkeley County took over the park and added a butterfly house, aquarium, and reptile house as well as a large meeting facility. The gardens serves as a site for environmental education, community festivals, and performing arts.
