CARR runs an extremely helpful website packed with information! Their staff is also active in their community educating people at public events. CARR is focussed on improving the quality of life for the elderly residents of RCFE's by tracking and improving the quality of services available to them. The technical assistance their director generously offers has been an invaluable resource for my family and I!
I used the CARR research service for assisted living facilities this past year. The service was easy to use, impartial, and I was able to better understand the type and quality of care individuals can expect to receive.
Consumer Advocates For RcFe Reform empowers individuals and family members with accurate information to make the best decision for their loved ones.
My experience with CARR has been excellent. Chris & Chrisy work tirelessly to ensure better care for the residents in California residential care facilities, and to expose those facilities which are not keeping their residents safe and not providing adequate care to their vulnerable residents.
CARR is providing a service that is long overdue. Providing care for your aging relatives should not be as difficult as it is. Thanks to their work, hopefully it will be much easier to make the right decisions in the future.
Having been able to work for CARR was a very rewarding experience. As an intern, CARR exposed me to the quality of care provided in RCFEs. I helped research facility information regarding compliance issue with RCFE policies and legalities. It was a good eye opener to what really goes on in many of California’s assisted living facility for elderly. CARR’s passion and dedication in improving elderly care and promoting awareness is very visible in their advocacy. CARR serves as a window to Assisted Living Facility and their services, which helps elderly and their family make better decision. It’s a very helpful and honest tool. I am very proud of the growth CARR has developed and to know that I have been part of this organization.
CARR does good work for the vulnerable Californians who live in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly. I have worked with CARR; they are thoughtful and effective in their advocacy.

As the former Public Guardian for the County of San Diego, I witnessed and observed the institutional elder abuse that occurs too often in residential care facilities. The co-directors’ tireless work to improve the quality of care in RCFE is not only admirable, but has saved countless lives. CARR’s impact is beyond measure.
I have been an professional elder care advocate for many years and an expert in geriatric care at all levels. I am so blessed and excited to have joined with CARR to work with a team who is extraordinarily skilled and devoted to improving the quality of life and care in RCFE and Assisted Living facilities.
Due to the "non-medical" status of the Assisted Living model of elder care and the relative lack of supervision by professionals who understand chronic care management in the geriatric population, the gaps in care delivery at this level are really quite astounding.
CARR is committed to helping Assisted Living facilities large and small develop quality mechanisms and best practices. CARR is truly a pioneer in the elder care consumer advocacy field. I could not be more proud to support them.
I had the opportunity of meeting both co-directors of CARR while I was a gerontology student in college. Their message of RCFE legislative reform really resonated with me. I had a grandmother in living in a care facility and I knew that legislation was a significant tool to create lasting improvements to this system of care. A few years later I was in search of an internship program and reached out to CARR to apply. I wanted to find something that I was personally passionate about, but also would provide me with useful professional and life skills. After acceptance I was immersed in the world of RCFE rules and regulations, loopholes that needed to be closed, personal stories of neglect and potential solutions to problems. This internship provided me with invaluable critical thinking skills on how to develop and carry out lasting changes to systems of power. I completed two internship sessions with the org, and it was always a pleasure to learn and work with them. I loved the intimate work environment which provided consistent access to the co-directors. All of the tools and technologies used for my work and projects were very modern. Overall this internship provided me with a very multi faceted education. Critical thinking and planning skills were used daily. Public tabling events connected me with the population we serve. My technological skills were sharpened, and my overall maturity as a competent human was progressed. Forever grateful to Chris and Chrisy!
I had the honor to intern for CARR my senior year at San Diego State University and couldn't have asked for a more enriching experience. CARR is extremely dedicated to all that they do in being true advocates for RCFE reform. It is great to know that there are such wonderful people in Consumer Advocates for RCFE Reform who fight for the rights of the voiceless, and that there is hope for a change in the many issues others face in assisted living homes.
Whenever I have a question about the quality of a particular Assisted Living Facility, CARR provides all the information necessary to make an informed decision.
But the two wonderful ladies who run this non-profit go far beyond the services a subscriber can expect. Recently, a client reported a flu outbreak in her facility, and wasn't sure what the facility had to do about it, and what the resident's rights are.
One call to CARR was all it took...armed with names and phone numbers of whom to call at which agency, it only took the facility a day to do the right thing(s).
CARR provides an invaluable service to the community!
This nonprofit fills an important void here in California; it helps to reduce or eliminate abuses by staff/management at Assisted Living Facilities. It does this by information gathering and publication and via advocacy. It's small but IMPACTFUL. "the mouse that roared". CARR has earned and deserves our support, as seniors.
The passion of the CARR leadership is quite evident as I've been fortunate enough to hear Chris Murphy speak about reforming residential care facilities. They tackled the monumental task of researching facilities' records and now rating them to benefit older people being cared for in these facilities. What they've accomplished is phenomenal! Dedicated professionals making a difference in San Diego County.
Reforming the Assisted Living/Memory Care industry is a daunting prospect; caring for diverse, frail seniors is complex and provider quality varies greatly. CARR staff realize this, yet they push on enthusiastically and with great hope that the industry can get better. They take an even-handed approach that recognizes the difficulties facing providers without letting them off the hook to deliver quality services and care. I worked with them on a County project to develop a provider rating system - a task about as complex and confounding as the industry itself. The staff facilitated the process efficiently and effectively, realizing that what they were developing for the first round was not going t be perfect, but it would be a big step in the right direction. it was rewarding work and I enjoyed the experience. I look forward to working with them again.
CARR is a focused and innovative non-profit, clearly committed to advancing quality in California's assisted living system. The organizational leadership is dedicated to ensuring consumers, their caregivers and the public have access to the information they need to understand the complexities of assisted living. Grateful an organization like CARR exists!
I was fortunate enough to intern with CARR & I can say that they are an amazing nonprofit organization! Chris and Chrisy are extremely motivated & determined to give every RCFE resident the care they deserve & I am so glad to have been a part of their journey!
CARR is just amazing! They are so devoted to what they do. They are really trying to make a difference.
CARR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reforming residential care facilities to protect their elderly and vulnerable clientele. They are highly knowledgeable and effective advocates, being recognized for their efforts with a free speech award and being awarded a contract to rate residential care facilities within San Diego County. Their website offers a myriad of information to educate and assist consumers on RCFE and elder abuse issues, including alerts of which RCFE's are on probation. Their efforts have helped many.
Dedicated, motivated, knowledgeable and driven to succeed. A non-profit that will have a lasting legacy in San Diego and across the country.
I've had the honor of working with one of the advocates at CARR, Christina Selder. She and her colleagues are hard-working and very knowledgeable about the senior care industry. They offer very wise input into matters that help make safer environments for our older population. I deeply enjoy working with the folks at CARR. Carol Marak
I first learned about CARR at an Oasis presentation and quickly became an enthusiastic CARR promoter among my friends--senior citizens like myself. California has now become safer and more secure for seniors in residential care facilities as a direct result of the very hard work of this small group of dedicated citizens! I, for one, am very grateful--my day may come!
A unique, problem-solving approach to crucial issues in long-term care. CARR is creating a grassroots response to improve a system that has many gaps. I had the pleasure working with Christina Selder and CARR on a California State Peace Officer Training video on Elder Abuse. Christina volunteered her time and helped to design a training video so officers know what to look out for when serving our elderly community. Her expertise was immeasurable. She is genuinely passionate about the importance of our elderly living out their golden years with dignity and grace, and to reside in a safe place with quality care.
Very passionate advocates with big hearts. This small operation has made impressive impact throughout the state of California. They have brought greater transparency to the system of assisted living by posting detailed information on their website. They continue to strive for more accountability and better quality of life for those in assisted care.
CARR does an amazing job of helping to ensure that Residential Care Facilities provide safe and compassionate care to elderly residents. This nonprofit has been essential in getting legislation passed that helps ensure elderly residents are protected from abuse/neglect. Also, CARR's website is an amazing resource to help consumers research facilities before deciding to live there or placing a loved one there.
