Causes: Crime & Law, Dispute Resolution & Mediation
Mission: Conciliation Forums of Oakland strengthens the capacity of people in the diverse communities of the Oakland area to manage conflict through collaborative problem solving and constructive interaction. Believing that conflict is an inevitable part of life, and that working through our interpersonal and group conflicts strengthens communities, CFO staff and volunteers offer accessible conflict management training, mediation, and facilitation services.
Programs: CFO offers low or no cost mediations for neighbors, families, coworkers, landlords & tenants, businesses & consumers. We receive referrals from the police, courts, other organizations and agencies, as well as friends and former clients. We train our own volunteer mediators and we offer a variety of trainings in conflict resolution to the public. CFO facilitates meetings within groups, such as retreats, or between groups, such as multi-party conflicts between community organizations or neighborhoods and local agencies. CFO's ParentTeen Program trains peer mediators in middle schools and we train teens as CFO volunteer mediators for cases involving teens. We offer ongoing support groups for parents and teens and Family Communication Skills Workshops in English and Spanish.
