Mission: Dedicated to a World Without Colorectal Cancer
Results: Screening rates have increased over the past 10 years for both men and women to about 85% for people with insurance over the age of 50. Now we need to continue this work and get rates on par for the uninsured and specific ethnic groups that have historically been low. We are partnering with NYC DOH and ACS to help remove barriers associated with early detection and screening rates for people in NYC that are using the Federally Qualified Health Centers but have not taken advantage of the screening services available there. We are also in the process of setting up a one year fellowship for a young researcher to work in a world class research facility to study genetic and epigenetic changes that will lead to new breakthroughs.
Target demographics: Reduce colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and death.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Educate over 50,000 people on the importance of early screening our grassroots community based outreach efforts.
Geographic areas served: the greater New York area
Programs: Increase awareness about the importance of early screening. Develop public/private partnerships with health professionals and national organizations to increase knowledge and CRC screening rates. Increase awareness of CRC risk factors and factors that may help prevent CRC, including family/genetic history. Raise and provide funds for screening services to the underserved. Award translation research grants to study genetic and epigenetic changes that will lead to new breakthroughs in the prevention and therapy of CRC
