Mission: In 2004, we started walking alongside just 10 third graders in the rio grande historic district. Ten years later, ciudad nueva is building long term relationships with hundreds of kids and their families through after school programming, mentoring, summer camps, soccer teams, financial literacy porgrams and community dinners. We are empowering youth, supporting families, equipping leaders and building community. Over the past ten years, ciudad nueva students have excelled in school and earned academic scholarships to college, youth have grown deep in their faith and now disciple students younger than themselves, parents work hard to learn english and acquire relevant work skills, residents come together to advocate for improvements in the neighborhood, and a mosaic of downtown church denominations work alongside each other with a profound care for the well-being of their
Programs: Building community and supporting families: empowering our community through neighborhood initiatives community dinners - every other month for families of participating students. Seasonal events - join others in organizing fall festival, christmas store, health fair, etc. Community advocacy - work with neighborhood associations + other groups for neighborhood education, community improvements. Downtown connection - help coordinate outreach efforts with local churches + organizations (network of 60+) to build relationships, avoid duplication, collaborate on service provision, and foster a healthy neighborhood environment. Empowering families through relational support: regular informal counseling + referral to dozens of local resources/ agencies occasional emergency rent or utility assistance periodic provision of food, household items, furniture + appliances assistance for enrollment in ged + job training programs job search assistance + referrals community college scholarships connection of youth + families with local churches
empowering youth: ciudad nueva youth programs provide a setting where students can find friends, mentors and a place to to call home. These programs are built on a holistic framework aimed at nurturing kids physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually. In 2013 ciudad nueva provided over 20 hours/week of structured after-school programs aimed at developing students in all of these areas. Kids are connected to mentors and adult leaders who serve as models and support the kids in achieving their full potential. Over 350 student participated in ciudad nueva's youth programs in 2013. Elementary school (launch pad) program met twice each week after school and included: matching each child with an adult mentor for a long term friendship snack study time rotating activities arranged around a semester theme (such as integrity or love) including: spiritual growth and life skills lessons (e. G. Dealing with conflict) climbing wall training, art activities + open recreation middle school (kids create) program met three times each week after school and included: snack study time daily activities: tuesdays - selection of short courses in areas such computer repair, sewing, auto mechanics, photography, art, dance, piano, and chess wednesdays - wyldlife youth club - music, crazy games, relationships and a message or life skills lesson thursdays - open recreation - games, sports, hanging out, relationships, youth store high school program met in the evenings during the week and included: young life club (mon. Nights) - music, crazy games, relationships and a message or life skills lesson campaigners (tues. Nights) - for those wishing to explore deeper issues + spiritual truths sun city wolves boys soccer team - practiced and played weekly league games, consistently placing in the top 3 teams in the league. Go wolves sun city wolves summer and fall soccer tournaments - organized up to 16 7x7 soccer teams in seasonal tournaments summer camps 70 students attended summer camps in 3 states for 1 week of adventure, new friendships, spiritual growth and the best week of their lives one ciudad nueva student was accepted to spend 3 weeks at lost canyon young life camp in arizona as part of work crew - growing in faith, working in the cafeteria and helping lead activities.
equipping leaders: border fellows equipping a new generation for transformational work in struggling urban communities. Three border fellows joined us in 2013 for our 10-month leadership development opportunity aimed at providing experience and training for young adults to: empower youth + families through an internship with ciudad nueva engage some of the most challenging issues facing our border region identify the needs and assets of lower-income high risk communities gain tools for effective life and leadership in these settings build bridges between the church and the marginalized grapple with the integration of faith, vocation, and urban community development reflect in community on god's direction for their personal and professional lives mobilizing, training and connecting multiplying leaders with a heart for developing under-resourced neighborhoods. Ciudad nueva (in partnership with la frontera) led two graduate seminary classes for border fellows - and other interested parties - addressing issues of faith, poverty, culture, youth, community development, ethics and contemporary border issues. Students developed a sunday school series on poverty, the gospel, and me. Ciudad nueva leaders shared about bridge-building and community development work at seminars, workshops and churches in el paso, juarez, waco, chicago and new orleans. Led the way in collaborating to form el paso chapter of the christian community development association -- hosted 2 citywide events and a 1-day in depth christian community development training for invested local leaders indigenous leadership development - three new el paso staff (one from our neighborhood) joined the cn team to intentionally re-invest in the transformation of the rio grande district
