Mission: The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage was founded in 1983 when a badly injured young chimp was brought to the Zambian farm of David and Sheila Siddle. Although not expected to live, the Siddles nursed the chimp back to health, thereby establishing a tradition of care and respect that today allows over 70 chimps -- many rescued from poachers or black-market traders -- to live happy, healthy lives. Funded entirely by donations and grants, Chimfunshi is dedicated to helping man's closest relative, even as hunting and deforestation destroy his natural habitat. Chimfunshi's chimps are too habituated to be returned to the wild, meaning they will live out the rest of their lives in the sanctuary's ad-hoc family groups. Chimfunshi also cares for other injured and unwanted wildlife, including antelope, monkeys, baboons, parrots, and a hippopotamus.
