Mission: Since 1973, CHAC’s programs have been addressing a variety of emotional problems that effect children and teens, and cause stress within their families. These problems can include drug and alcohol abuse, physical and psychological abuse, teen pregnancy and truancy, domestic violence, gang participation, child custody conflicts, suicide prevention, economic hardship, and any other crisis or situation that may produce destructive behavior. All of CHAC’s programs are designed to protect young people from high-risk behaviors such as alcohol use, illicit drug use, violence, and sexual activity, while building personal assets such as school success, valuing diversity, maintaining good health, and delaying gratification that will insure that they have the greatest chance for success in life.
Programs: The programs offered by CHAC include: Prevention Plus: Direct counseling and supportive services for children and youth on 24 local school campuses to address emotional and social health needs, Children are referred by teachers and school administrators. The Village Program is a part of Prevention plus and is operated at three of the 24 schools served. Village Wellness: Our in-house counseling program for children, youth and families. Issues addressed include any problem that would be causing stress within the family (e.g. depression, child abuse, domestic violence, gang participation, economic hardship, substance abuse, parenting skills, communication breakdown, and relationship issues). Restorative Justice: A Santa Clara County Probation Department funded program that provides restorative justice to first-time youthful offenders through balancing the unique needs of victims, offenders and communities. The program creates opportunities for each of these parties to be involved in the justice process. First 5 Family Partners: A north county community partnership whereby CHAC provides Family Partners to engage and assist parents/caregivers of children prenatal through age 5 using a strength based approach which includes: identification of a family's strengths, unique concerns and priorities; development of a Child Service Plan; and support in accessing and coordinating needed services. Outlet Program: Provides support, HIV prevention education, leadership development, outreach and education for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth ages 13-18. Outlet is a safe, accepting, and confidential place for LGBTQQ youth to express themselves, develop their strengths, and help improve their communities. Outlet was originally part of the YWCA and was transferred to CHAC when the YWCA closed. New Outlooks: A drug and alcohol recovery program for teens who are working toward a clean and sober lifestyle, free from alcohol and drug use. Through counseling, support, and other interventions, individuals have the opportunity to learn how to lead sober and productive lives, improve relationships, and learn about themselves.
