Mission: CID teaches children who are deaf and hard of hearing to listen, talk, read and succeed. We empower families and professionals in St. Louis and worldwide to help children reach their fullest potential.

Results: CID school alumni have attended at least 180 universities and achieved success in a wide gamut of professions — including careers in business, education, science, medicine, aviation, law and academia.

Target demographics: families and their children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to listen, talk read and succeed.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 200 children and their families

Geographic areas served: St. Louis

Programs: Each year, CID provides intensive assessment-and ability-based academic training and auditory-oral education (speech, language and listening) for students with hearing loss ages 0 to 12 years. CID serves children birth to 3 in the Joanne Parrish Knight Family Center by helping their families learn to work with them at home. In the Family Center toddler classes, two-year-olds receive small-group and one-on-one instruction from experienced teachers of the deaf and speech-language pathologists. The program features home visits and flexible scheduling. In CID's Anabeth and John Weil Childhood Education Center, teachers of the deaf and early childhood specialists help 3- to 5-year-olds build speech, language, pre-literacy, pre-academic and social skills in a child-friendly, language-rich environment. The CID Virginia J. Browning Primary School prepares children 6 to 12 years old to succeed in their own local schools. CID school children benefit from significant scholarship support, on-site pediatric audiology and occupational therapy, a school counselor , before and after school care and a better than 4-1 student-teacher ratio. CID turns no deaf or hard of hearing child away based on a family's inability to pay. CID also offers practicum experiences for graduate students at local universities, continuing education courses for professionals and educational curricula and products used to help deaf children worldwide.

My granddaughter, who was born with microtia, attended the program for 2 to three year olds. I can't say enough about the school. She received daily 1 to 1 therapy, as well as participating in the daily class program. The teachers were enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. There was great communication, with weekly progress reports. They had wonderful field trips and creative projects. Its a first class school in every way.

My great-niece has been a part of the CID family since birth. Now 5 years old, she continues to grow with confidence each day. Have heard wonderful things about CID for years but having family member be a participant in your organization confirms beyond words what a great place for her to be a part

My daughter was born with moderate to severe bilateral hearing loss. I reached out to CID as soon as I found out. I had no idea what to expect or how to deal with the challenges we would be facing with our daughter. CID immediately calmed my fears and let me know we would not be alone! The teachers and staff at CID made it clear that our child and her needs were important to them and took us through the step by step process of obtaining any and all assistance to meet her needs. She began with in home therapy with one of CIDs staff and progressed to the nursery program, through preschool and was eventually mainstreamed into the public education system by kindergarten! The staff at CID was instrumental in ensuring my daughter received proper interventions to maximize her learning in the public school system. We attended meetings at the new school that included a representative from CID. She pointed out any areas of concern and gave key points on how to address these issues. CID also sent a representative to speak to my daughters classmates regarding her hearing devices . She informed the class and answered any questions so as to not create a distraction for our child during school hours. CID treated us like family! Aside from the love and respect I have for the institution and it’s educators, I must include that without the financial assistance CID provided my family, we never would have been able to provide our daughter with the much needed education she received! I can not express how much I value and appreciate everything CID did for us.

My daughter was a student here from 2011-2018. She would not be where she is today without CID. We are forever grateful to them!

Many years ago as a high school volunteer I was truly impressed with all I saw at CID: hard working students, devoted teachers, and a place of learning and joy. Now as a member of the CID board I am even more in awe of the inspiring work they do. They have helped thousands of kids find their voices and learn to navigate a hearing world, while supporting families, educators, and healthcare professionals with expertise and support. It feels great to give to CID because you know that the money is being well used to improve lives. We are so fortunate to have this school as a pillar in the nonprofit St. Louis community.

We moved to St. Louis when my son was 2 1/2 in large part so he could attend CID. It's one of the best decisions I have ever made! It is far and away the best school I have ever seen. The faculty and staff are all so kind, bright, and inclusive; the facility is beautiful with great acoustics; the student-teacher ratio is amazing. Love our CID family! Nico is now a mainstreamed 8th grader and is rocking his classes, most of which are honors/advanced. Thanks, CID! The amazing foundation you gave him is such a huge part of his success.

We moved from Utah to St. Louis so my daughter could attend CID. It was, without a doubt, the best choice we have ever made. CID changed the trajectory of her life. She learned to listen and speak, advocate for herself and to read and love reading. We could not be more thankful for CID.
