Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The Center for World Music is a nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to foster awareness and understanding of the world''s performing arts and cultural traditions through programs of performance and teaching.

Programs: While some schools and communitiesin our expansive and culturally diverse county embrace the value of artseducation, the delivery of quality arts instruction is a continuing challenge. The World Music in the Schools andCommunities Program supports our mission to foster awareness and understandingof the world’s performing arts and cultures and furthers our commitment tobring the artistic resources, unique focus, and exceptional expertise of theCenter directly to children—both to their schools, and to their regionalcommunities. Program participantsreceive ongoing, hands-on instruction in world music and dance traditions fromAsia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The project impacts children (ages 5-18), parents, school staff, andregional communities. The artisticmerit of the project has been recognized by ongoing support from the NationalEndowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, and the San DiegoCommission for Arts and Culture.

The Center for World Music will host Distinguished Visiting Artist-Teacher Mr. Jorge Choquehuillca from Cusco, Peru during February - May, 2013. Mr. Choquehuillca is a master traditional musician and will provide nearly 1,000 K-12 students in San Diego with weekly, hands-on instruction in traditional Peruvian music.

This fundraising campaign's goal is to raise enough funds to provide each 3rd and 4th grader at Linda Vista Elementary with his or her own authentic Peruvian panpipe to use during the program, and then keep forever!
