Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Singing & Choral Groups

Mission: Cantabile youth singers contributes to the community by teaching a world-class youth choral music education program that nurtures each singer's body, mind and heart as they collaborate to learn performance skills, develop self-esteem and confidence. We foster learning that develops audiences and performers for the future.

Programs: $397,104 tuition, retreat and summer camp revenue for fiscal 2016-2017we provide 42 weeks of music education and rehearsals that offer comprehensive music theory and performance training for students. We serve 310 children on a weekly basis in our los altos location and teach musicianship and vocal performance. We teach children starting at age 4 and continuing up to age 18. Cantabile is committed to providing the opportunity for children to explore their love of music and to participate in choral music education and performance from a very early age. Our choir programs start with our training division and offer kodaly and orff based musical exploration and education starting with pre-kindergarten aged children and progressing up through seniors in high school. This vision of teaching children through their entire school careers came from our founder signe boyer's observation that children's music education programs in schools were being cut drastically. Her passion for teaching music and her emphasis on the importance of choral singing as an act of learning to participate in something greater than oneself to create beauty and share it with the world drove her to start the choir. Today there are very few public school opportunities for children to be taught music in the classroom. Cantabile fills this niche and provides many participation opportunities for kids throughout their k-12 school experience. Our hands on approach to teaching children singing, music theory and musicianship helps them develop not only their voices but also their appreciation of performance, visual art, languages and travel. This inspires a lifetime of participation in the arts that benefits not only the child but also society because these children become adults that support the arts and foster a sense of community around art and performance.

concert/outreach mission: net concert revenue: (gross concert revenue=$46,296 less concert expense $27,082 =$19,214 net revenue)we sponsor the children's choral music festival annually and serve 250 chilren from local high school and middle school choirs with a composer in residence, day long workshop and public concert. We produce three of our own concerts per year and participate in multiple other events throughout our community including singing missa tango with symphony silicon valley, stanford symphony orchestra and performing at nursing homes, community centers, filoli garden center, starting arts and veterans day memorial benefit. We also tour (crescent city choral music festival in new orleans and ifcm in barcelona, spain summer, 2017) and share our music nationally and internationally. We performed for 14,000 audience members last year. We competed in the interkultur golden state choral competition in monterey, ca and took 1st place in our division and a gold medal.

scholarships: cantabile offered $27,644 from the signe boyer scholarship fund for tuition assistance and $5,326 from the tour scholarship fund. Named for our founder signe boyer who started cantabile to help promote children's music education and choral singing in our area. No child is turned away from cantabile because of financial need. We provided full tuition scholarhips and tuition reduction for our singers. We have a robust volunteer program that allows parents to support the organization with their time as well.

development: new music commissioning program, annual fund campaign and gala auction fundraiser, svgives day of giving: this year we continued our music commissioning program with two commissioning events featuring composer, joan szymko and joined a group commission with chorus america for a work by andrea ramsey. We have an annual letter based fundraising campaign to raise money from our community and we host a gala each year to honor a member of the community who participates in and furthers the arts in our area and to raise needed funds to support our general operation and scholarship program. We raise 35% of our revenue through contributed sources: annual campaign, gala, corporations and foundations.

I graduated from Cantabile last year after being a member of the choir for seven years. It really changed my life--I gained a lot of experience and skills in choral singing and made many great friends. Cantabile is not only a very high-quality children's choir that performs sophisticated repertoire, but it is also really fun to be a part of and to watch perform. I'm very glad I had the opportunity to participate in it!
