Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Crime & Law, Education, Higher Education, Prison Alternatives, Student Services, Youth Development Programs

Mission: The Blue Heart Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization focused on the character development and education of undeserved youth ages 13-18 in the greater San Diego County community. With 90% of our student families are of low to moderate income it is critical that underserved youth are prepared for higher education through academics as well as character development. We consistently provide mentoring, personal and professional workshops, along with college campus and teambuilding trips which develop social skills. As a growing mentoring program primarily serving Southeast San Diego our growth has tripled the past three years to nearly 100 youth. There is HOPE and below we outline the epidemic, some consequences and a few solutions. The Magnitude of the Epidemic • One in three children are born to unmarried parents. • An estimated 24.7 million children do not live with their biological father. • 43% of urban teens live away from their father. • 42% of fathers fail to see their children at all after divorce. • Since 1990 the rate of U.S. boys without fathers has quadrupled. • 1 in 5 black men had been incarcerated as of 2015. If current trends continue, 1 in 3 black males born today will spend time in prison in his lifetime. The Consequences A recent Newsweek article “The Trouble with Boys” states “one of the most reliable predictors of whether a boy will succeed or fail in high school rests on a single question: does he have a man in his life to look up to? Too often, the answer is no.” • 85% of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. • 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. • 80% of rapists with displaced anger come from fatherless homes. • 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. • Gang membership increased from 50,000 in 1975 to 2,150,000 in 2015. • 90% of homeless children are from fatherless homes. • 85% of children with behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes. • 90% of adolescent repeat arsonists live with only their mother. • Fatherless boys are 4 times more likely to need help for emotional or behavioral problems. We have a proven approach to producing real change within young men, and we couldn’t be more excited to lead the charge in a much overdue movement. The circumstances and daily environment that many of our nation’s youth experience is absolutely heart breaking. Despite this reality, Blue Heart can’t help but remain passionate and optimistic, for we have found a real answer that produces real change.

Results: The Solution Our community mentoring approach is drawing high praise from school principals, administrators and teachers for its documented ability to improve the academic performance, attendance and attitude, and reduce discipline issues, expulsion and dropout rates, of their most at-risk boys. School records show boys who participated for one school year improved their GPA by an average of 27% and their discipline incidents declined by 85%. Currently have a 100% admission rate to four year universities as well as 100% of our young men currently in their first and second years of college.

Love love LOVE Blue Heart! Tracy puts so much blood, sweat and tears guiding these young men to greatness! He has the energy to carry this organization and it shows, I've witnessed many of these young men being accepted into not just one college, but numerous. I love watching these guys grow and I'm always flattered when they want me to come out to capture some moments for them.

This is my sons second year attending the Blue Heart Foundation. We wanted to show our son that he is capable of being a Leader on and off the field. The mentors in Blue Heart are positive like minded young men, who teach and lead our our boys to be empowered, educated, and compassionate leaders. This foundation teaches our boys to put others first by hands on volunteer work in their communities. They also hold work shops once a month. In these work shops our young men are taught finances, domestic violence, the importance of college, help with applying to colleges, and peer to peer discussions. I am a proud Blue Heart parent! I

My youngest son literally went from getting D’s and C’s to almost all A’s! Are you serious! Wow! My son tells me, every time he comes back from Blue Heart, that he had the best day of his life, LOL! Thank you!

Blue Heart has helped my son tremendously! I’ve seen the changes in my son, and I can only imagine the impact that The Blue Heart Foundation could have on our community as a whole.

Doing the 2016-2017 academic year my grandson was a member of the Blue Heart family of young men and mentors. He became a member doing a critical point in his life as he grappled with academic and personal decisions. The challenges of being a Black male teenager handling decisions about direction and importance of choices and associations could have derailed him. His participation in the program provided him with an opportunity to interface with mentors community leaders and peers. The team building
activities challenged his assumptions about life and his future. The program immersed the group academically, socially, and culturally by providing exposure to cultural events, political actions, civic leaders, educators, and service opportunities. One of the most memorable activity was the opportunity to camp and surf providing excellent exposure to our parks and nature.

While he transitions early from the program, he has never stopped communicating with his mentor Tracy Morris. He regularly follows the program online. He frequently speaks to me about relevant stories he heard when he was an active participant in the program. He said to me that he has already asked Tracy for a letter of recommendation for College and he said,”yes”. This let me know that the Blue Heart team is in it for the long haul.

I am very grateful for the program and for the leadership provided by Mr. Morris and his support team. The Blue Heart program focuses on the building and supporting of the development of confidence, resourcefulness, loyalty, determination and drive. My grandson has had to overcome many challenges but his tenacity and determination were encouraged and supported by Blue Heart. I am watch him him make decisions about the next steps in his life incorporating skills he started building upon as a member of the Blue Heart family. Thank you.

“I first became familiar with the mentoring program Blue Heart almost three years ago, and was extremely impressed with the impact it was having on with at-risk young men in Southeast San Diego. Blue Heart is very unique in its approach to mentoring as it seeks to develop young boys without positive male influences and/or fathers. It is in an effective and comprehensive mentoring program proven to dramatically and positively impact young men, and Tracy Morris works to include an impressive parenting component in tandem to better address the needs of the whole child.” — Roosevelt Johnson Teacher at Wilson Middle School

My son just joined Blue Heart and so far we have been welcomed with open arms! One of the seniors who has been in the group for 4 years, initiated contact with my son and made him feel part of the group. That just shows the influence Blue Heart has on these young men. It teaches them to find courage and confidence within themselves so they can be a positive role model to others. We are looking forward to all of the community service activities and workshops scheduled for the group this year!

My son has been a part of the Blue Heart Foundation for more than a year. In this short time he has volunteered on at least a monthly basis to non-profit events like the March of Dimes walk as well as many community food and clothing drives. He has visited multiple colleges and learned what it takes to not only earn his place at a university but interview for a job, dress well and present himself to others. He has attended plays and baseball games.

Most importantly he is gaining a a greater understanding of what he needs to do to better himself and how he can contribute to his community. Tracy Morris has built a strong family of boys that support and mentor each other. My son's grades and focus on academics have improved and I look forward to what the future brings for him and his Blue Heart family.

What young men learn through the Blue Heart Foundation is invaluable. They learn the value of education and self worth, how to act responsibly and how to be a contributing member of society, how to give back, and how to make and execute a plan to excel. They are community focused and civic-minded. They are our future leaders and are prepared for leading. I am constantly impressed by these young men and their level of preparedness for service and excellence. They are everything I imagine the future to be. --Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Esq.

Watching young men grow into responsible adults is all that one could ask... What Blue Heart does is take young men and build them into confident, hard working members of society.

Their character and heartfelt work is unmatched.... I honestly have never seen a program like it.
