Mission: Composting & youth employment
Programs: Bk rot is a community supported year-round composting service. We employ young adults from our community at living wages to collect organic waste from businesses and organizations by bike. The material is processed at our site, know waste lands, in bushwick, brooklyn. Our team currently processes 10-12,000 lbs of organic waste per month. After 11 weeks the material is sifted into nutrient-rich finished compost used in gardens, house plants and in soil remediation projects. We work at the intersection of environmental and social injustices that impact local youth and our collective health and ecosystem. Bk rot centers the leadership of black, brown, undocumented, women, migrant and/or lgtbq youth and young adults, who disproportionately live with the consequences of environmental destruction and yet are largely excluded from tables where solutions are decided on. We believe that any solution to the crises of climate change must include their voices and genuinely allow for their leadership. ?
