Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services

Mission: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia is a full member affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Locally established in 1972, the program seeks to make a positive impact in the lives of children and youth and to assist them in becoming confident, competent and caring individuals by providing them with caring and responsible adult mentors.

Programs: Our service area includes the following throughout the Central Virginia area: Lynchburg and Bedford Cities, Bedford County, Buckingham County, Amherst County, Appomattox County, Campbell County, and Prince Edward County. The agency provides three different venues for mentoring opportunities. Community Based Mentoring is where the volunteer commits to spending 6-8 hours per month for a minimum of one calendar year with their "Little" and engage in activities throughout the community such as attending sporting events, helping with homework, going out to eat, etc. Site Based Mentoring is where volunteers commit to one hour per week and visit their "Little" during the school day throught the entire school year. We have partnerships with 22 local elementary schools and community centers. Matches engage in activities such as having lunch together, playing games, spending time on the playground, etc. Many of our Site Based mentors come from the following area colleges and schools: Lynchburg College, Randolph College, Sweet Briar College, Liberty University, Central Virginia Community College, and E.C. Glass High School. Other Site Based mentors are working professionals from the local community who take the time to mentor during their lunchbreak. The Big Sibling Program is a hybrid of these two programs and is based in Farmville Virginia in partnership with Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College. Volunteers commit for the entire school year and can visit their "Littles" at the school, and the "Littles" can also visit them on-campus and engage in college exploration activities such as eating in the dining hall, lounging in the dorm common areas, or studying in the library.
