Mission: Founded in 1990 as a support group for young people living with HIV/AIDS, 26 and under, Bay Area Young Positives grew very quickly. Members of the support group decided to form an agency as they noticed that there were no agencies geared toward their special needs as young people. The goals of BAY Positives are to reduce the isolation experienced by young people living with HIV/AIDS, to reduce self-destructive behaviors associated with the progression of HIV disease (e.g., substance abuse), and to empower HIV-positive youth to navigate complicated systems of care.
Programs: The programs and service areas of Bay Area Young Positives include emotional support (counseling, support groups), case management, education, outreach, and social and recreational opportunities. All of our services are peer-driven; therefore, fellow HIV-positive youth provide the front-line delivery of services. Youth development is a key part of our model of program provision. Additional services offered by BAY Positives include HIV testing and counseling, acupuncture, massage, and information and referral services.
