Causes: Autism, Disabilities, Health
Mission: To integrate children and young adults with autism into our community through our inclusive programs, utilizing their unique gifts and talents, while providing peers and volunteers a life changing experience.
Programs: Extended learning & development: an inclusion-based after school and summer enrichment program for children with autism, serving an ethnically and economically diverse population. Delivered in partnership with the ymca of greater charlotte and charlotte-mecklenburg schools (cms). Locations include: university meadows elementary, selwyn elementary, bylthe elementary, mallard creek high shcool, siskey ymca, mccrorey ymca, and harris ymca. Approximately 107 children (ages 5 to 17) served annually.
paths (preparing adolescents to transition from high school): a community based program that supports high school students with asperger's and similar social communication disorders as they navigate the challenging transition from high school to adulthood and/or to college. Locations include: queens university and university of north carolina charlotte with sessions running during fall, spring, and summer semesters. Approximately 38 youth (ages 15 to 22) served annually.
ican bike: a national model summer program that teaches children with autism and a range of other disabilities how to ride a conventional bicycle. 40 children served annually.
university autism outreach: (expenses 22,894) an innovative service delivery model that brings one-on-one and community-based support to children living with autism by matching them with local college students desiring valuable autism related internship experiences. Under the training and supervision of professional ac staff, interns provide individualized support in the home and work in various community settings serving children with autism. Approximately 213 children and families and 145 college students served annually. University partners include: davidson college, uncc, queens university, cpcc, johnson c. Smith, winthrop university, wingate college, university of south carolina, and columbia college. Line 4d also includes 94,732 general program expenses that are indirectly connected to the organizaiton's four other major programs.
