Programs: Landlord and tenant services. The telephone counseling program serves the educational and counseling needs of callers concerning residential tenant-landlord disputes. Phones are answered by trained councelors who offer options, refer callers to other agencies or suggest legal assistance through legal aid, lawyers referral services, etc. The rentals rights assistance program helps low-income renters enforce their rights for repairs by assisting the tenants in sending proper written requests. Mediations and negotiation with the landlord may also play a role.
Fair housing education and enforcement. The fair housing program helps any person in the Austin metropolitan area who has been discriminated against in the rental, sale, financing or appraisal of housing. It is illegal to discriminate against any person because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. In the city of Austin, it is also illegal to discriminate against any person because of marital status, sexual orientation, age, or status as a student. The fair housing program also provides fair housing education by providing seminars and presentations.
