Causes: Crime & Law, Dispute Resolution & Mediation
Mission: The association of family and conciliation courts is an interdisciplinary and international association of professionals dedicated to improving the lives of children and families through the resolution of family conflict.
Programs: The association held three conferences. (1) the afcc-aaml conference on advanced issues in child custody attracted approximately 400 registrants. There were 26 sessions. (2) the fall regional conference "beneath the surface of high conflict and troubled families" featured 36 sessions on topics covering high conflict, mediation, alienation, restorative justice parent-child contact problems. The conference was attended by 315 people and provided continuing education for psychologists and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, mental health professionals, mediators, and custoy evaluators. (3) the 55th annual conference, "compassionate family court systems: the role of trauma-informed jurisprudence attracted approximately 1,060 registrants, and offered more than 100 session focusing on trauma, mediation, education, family law education, intimate partner violence, and family court dispute resolution. The conference provided continuing education for psychologists and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, mental health professionals, mediators, and custody evaluators.
during the year the association served over 5,275 members, an incfrease of 193 membes from the previous year. Members are provided access to an international network of colleagues, a subscription to the association's academic and research journal, conferences, and training programs, the member section of the website, webinars, referrals and assistance from the association's staff, and more.
the association offers training programs open to the public and can provide on-site training and consulting for agencies and organizations. During the year the association held four training programs (two in baltimore and two in chicago) that were attended by 151 people. Afcc held twelve webinars during fiscal year 2017-18 on topics including parental alienation, domestic violence, and parenting disputes during the holidays. Presenters volunteered their services. Attendance averaged 152 members and 13 non-members per webinar and an average of 79 certificates of attendance were purchased.
special projects during 2017-18 focused on the development of two sets of guidelines: (1) guidelines for the use of social science research in family law; and (2) guidelines for parenting coordination members of the latter project is also developing additional resources and will write several journal articles. Afcc sold publications to members that were developed by the association. Afcc published a quarterly journal, family court review, which is a benefit of membership. The journal is produced in cooperation with hofstra law school and published by wiley.
