Causes: Higher Education, Job Training
Mission: Ascendium is on a mission to make education and training after high school a reality for learners from low-income backgrounds. As a national education philanthropy, we fund systemic change to ensure learners from low-income backgrounds have a path to upward mobility available to them. As a student and employee success solutions provider, we support colleges and employers in promoting academic achievement, long-term financial wellness, and student loan repayment success. As an education impact investor, we invest in education-focused companies that create and develop innovations to improve learner outcomes. As a federal student loan guarantor, we help borrowers avoid defaulting on their student loan or get their student loan back in good standing if they've already defaulted.
Target demographics: Learners from low-income backgrounds
Geographic areas served: United States
Programs: Ascendium’s national education philanthropy program envisions a world where more low-income learners succeed in postsecondary education and workforce training as a path to upward mobility, regardless of race, rurality, history of incarceration, or other factors. In support of that vision, known as our North Star, we fund efforts to improve postsecondary education and workforce training systems. Our grantmaking is driven by three core strategies: Expand Opportunity, Support Learner Success, and Connect and Align Systems. For our Expand Opportunity strategy, we fund efforts to create more options for learners to engage in postsecondary education or workforce training that provides a direct path to living-wage employment in high-growth, high-demand fields. For our Support Learner Success strategy, we fund efforts to build and strengthen systems of academic and nonacademic support and redesign structures to help learners navigate and succeed in postsecondary education and workforce training. For our Connect and Align Systems strategy, we fund efforts to connect and align systems to ensure all learning counts toward credentials with labor market value and that learners do not experience dead ends as they pursue postsecondary education and workforce training.
