Mission: To enhance the quality of life of people who are blind or otherwise visually impaired, by providing a wide range of services aimed at:1. Promoting independence, dignity, and full participation in all spheres of life; at home, at work and in the (cont. On sch o) community. 2. Educating the general public regarding the capabilities and needs of individuals who are blind and visually impaired, while serving as a resource for information about all aspects of dealing with vision loss. 3. Facilitating acceptance of individuals who are blind and visually impaired throughout society, while working toward equalization of opportunity.
Programs: Orientation & mobility training/rehabilitation training: acbvi provides instruction in all activities of daily living impacted by vision loss. Instructional areas include: braille; handwriting; keyboard operation, home management, labeling, and grooming. Orientation and mobility provides sensory, cane training, electronic mobility devices and working with guide dogs. Provides travel training at home, work, school and in various community settings. Services were provided to 620 individuals who are blind and visually impaired.
assistive technology: the arizona center for the blind and visually impaired provides instruction and training for computer speech access; computer screen magnification, and print to braille systems for individuals who are visually impaired and blind. In other areas of physical impairments the agency provides dictate systems, trackballs, head pointing mouse, one-handed keyboards, switches and work site evaluations. Additionally formal classes are offered in keyboarding, introduction to computers, word processing, internet and e-mail, and hand held adaptive equipment such as cell phones, ipads, etc. , now accessible for various disabilities. Services were provided to 745 individuals.
social recreation: the arizona center for the blind and visually impaired provides adult continuing education; arts and crafts, adaptive exercise, and special programs for the elderly. Services were provided to 651 individuals who are blind and visually impaired.
counseling/orientation to disability: the arizona center for the blind and visually impaired provides evaluations; counseling through support groups, families, and individuals, referrals to other social work services, and classes specifically related to services available through the blindness and visual impairment service delivery system. Services were provided to 575 individuals who are blind and visually impaired.
