Mission: Argonaut is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded by D. Andrew Ferguson and Douglas McConnell in 2010. Recognizing the workforce shortages and a lack of diversity in the aerospace and maritime industries, they created a combined business/education model that incorporates a project-based learning environment and real-life experiences for high school-aged youth in the city of Cleveland. Our Mission is to build adventurers through immersive learning experiences that challenge assumptions and shift norms for growing empowered talent in aerospace and maritime fields. The corporation’s name was changed from PHASTAR to Argonaut in June 2022; not satisfied with the status quo, Argonaut has developed infrastructure, invested in human capital, and engaged in solid partnerships to propel its growth. The staff has been working diligently to build capacity and implement a strategic plan for expansion and sustainability that will carry it well into the future.
Results: Argonaut has grown from just four employees in 2021 to a full-time staff of 12, with 4 part-time workers. We are grateful for the hard work of our 16 volunteer Board of Directors. During the summer months, we add 5-7 part-time positions and employ 6 paid interns. In partnership with Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School and Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Argonaut is the industry expert, connecting over 270 students and 33 teachers to hands-on learning experiences that support building career pathways in aerospace and maritime. Argonaut plays several roles, including developing exploratory programming in the industry fields, building partnerships with industry leaders to build credentialed training programs, and creating direct career pathways. The team also ensures the teaching staff at Davis A&M is well-equipped to develop connections between core content standards and their application to the industry sectors. Core Programs at Argonaut include Year-Round Expanded Learning Programs, Work Experiences and internships; Pre-Apprenticeships; CTE Credentialing; Family Engagement Programming; Professional Development; Career Immersion Programming; and Pipeline Partnerships with Industry Leaders.
