Causes: Education, Educational Services
Mission: To provide one on one, no cost ESL tutoring to residents of the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago. We need many volunteers to advance our mission of providing an entryway to the United States.
Results: 2011-2012 Accomplishments 186 limited English-proficient learners participated in one-on-one tutoring or small group instruction 100% of learners participated in computer-based instruction to supplement one-on-one tutoring or small group instruction in English as Second Language 100% of learners have achieved one goal while studying at Aquinas Literacy Center After 30 hours of instruction, 93 learners demonstrated measurable gains when standardized tested with the English as a Second Language Oral Assessment (ESLOA) 132 volunteer tutors provided nearly 4,000 hours of instruction to their learners 40 new volunteer tutors received 12 hours of pre-service training and were certified ESL tutors through ProLiteracy Worldwide 73 volunteer tutors participated in on-going professional development, demonstrating their commitment to our learners and our mission

I have volunteered as an ESL tutor with Aquinas Literacy Center for two years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have worked with the same student for much of this time, and have been impressed with his dedication and his progress. The staff has been friendly and helpful in preparing tutors for the experience of working with students. The center feels like a genuine community comprised of tutors, students and staff.
