Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Health, Lung Diseases

Mission: The American Lung Association of Nebraska is a non-profit, non-governmental volunteer health organization dedicated to the prevention and control of lung disease and the promotion of respiratory health. It is affiliated with the national American Lung Association. Founded in 1907 as the Nebraska Tuberculosis Association, the Association was established to fight tuberculosis, the leading cause of death in the United States at that time. As the disease was brought under control over the years, the group's attention turned toward the challenges brought about by other diseases of the lung. Today, our areas of focus are asthma, tobacco use in children and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including emphysema, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis. Not only is the organization concerned about lung diseases, but also the factors which cause and/or aggravate these diseases, including tobacco use, environmental triggers, air pollution and occupational lung hazards.
