Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education

Mission: To advocate for & support child development professionals in order to create a quality, culturally sensitive early care & education for minnesota's children.

Programs: Wicoie nandagikendan urban immersion projectin 2005 the organization implemented the first network of urban early childhood centers in the u. S. That incorporates native american language immersion components as the focus of learning readiness best practices. The wicoie nandagikendan program employs traditional dakota & ojibwe speakers to teach native languages to native children in the phillips neighborhood. Wicoie nandagikendan's language immersion partners include language immersion professionals & activists, little earth of united tribes, the neighborhood early learning center, & four directions family center. The focus of this program is to provide access to dakota & ojibwe languages to native children & their caregivers. Our goals are to increase the academic achievement & competencies of native american children through pre-school dakota & ojibwe language immersion/school readiness programs, & to empower parents to support their own & their children's language development. (wicoie is a dakota word that means "words & letters". Nandagikendan is an ojibwe word for "learning. ") research shows that indigenous language immersion is the most effective strategy for academic achievement of native american children. Language immersion is a critical piece of regaining & retaining native culture and transcending intergenerational historical trauma.
