I've been a donor and volunteer at Alexandria Tutoring for the last five years. The help teach K, First and Second graders in the Alexandria public school system to read. One thing I like as a donor is that they keep you up to date each year on how well the kids are doing. (Generally 85%+ make it to grade level.) They are also good about letting you know how much of your donations go to the program (~90%).
I can't recommend them more highly.

Causes: Education, Literacy, Primary & Elementary Schools, Remedial Reading & Encouragement
Mission: To help kindergarten, first, and second grade students in Alexandria City Public Schools read on or above grade level.
Results: Over 4,000 children served since 1997, including last year's 255 students of whom 89% met or exceeded grade level benchmarks and 100% made substantial gains.

Programs: Book Buddies! ATC trains volunteers to work one-on-one with students using a state-of-the-art, phonics-heavy tutoring program. ATC teachers write lesson plans targeting each child's literacy needs, tutors and students work together twice a week during the school day, and tutoring works. 89% of last year's students met year-end reading benchmarks and 100% made substantial gains.
