Executive Director (ED) Cindy Houts (formerly ED of Alameda County Meals On Wheels) is doing a tremendous job of "modernizing" the Alameda Food Bank facility and services by creating a more welcoming environment for its clients. Both the Distribution Center and the Warehouse operations are top-notch and improving all the time, with energetic, caring Staff members working daily with the needy in Alameda. No one should go hungry in this "land of plenty" nation, no matter what her or his socio-economic status or current situation might be. Remember that cash donations are the very best way to help Ms. Houts and her Staff do the important work they have taken on, on behalf of our citizens and the community-at-large!

Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries, Food Programs
Mission: The Food Bank''s mission is to provide nutritious food to the low-income residents of the City of Alameda on a non-discriminating basis. Last year the Food Bank''s 120+ regular volunteers served an average of 2,000 individual recipients per month. The Food Bank is one of Alameda''s primary social service organizations and in addition to its regular food distribution program, is the only Alameda distribution site for USDA government surplus food. The community need continues to increase. There has been a 50% increase in clients served since 2007.
Programs: We provide food to 3375 low-income Alameda residents. Food Bank clients are allowed to participate in four distinct programs each month, and doing so results in approximately 10-12 days worth of food.Our regular Program (M-W-F 1-4 pm, Tue 4:30-6:30 pm or 2nd & 3rd Saturdays 11 am-1 pm of each month) remains the core of our distribution.For the past several years, AFB has been the exclusive distributor of USDA surplus foods on the 3rd Wednesday of th month, averaging 213 households per month.For the past two years we have also offered a Customer Food Selection distribution from our Alameda Point warehouse, resulting in an average of 236 households per month over this past year. We also provide home delivery to between 20-25 households each month.All of our clients fit within the 0-50% of median income level. A general review of our clients' incomes indicates a large portion of their household income falls well below City of ALameda and USDA requirements for those qualifying for food distribution. Approximately 40% of our clients are children.
