Mission: As a leader in U.S. microfinance, ACCION USA empowers low-to-moderate income business owners through access to capital and financial education. With economic opportunity, these entrepreneurs, often minorities and women, can build assets, better provide for their families, create employment and strengthen their communities.
Results: As of December of 2010:
19,686 loans have been made.
$123.8 million dollars have been lent.
$7,195 is the average loan size.
89% is the historic repayment rate.
Target demographics: For women and men without access to affordable loans, the business challenges that arise can be overwhelming. An experienced restaurant owner simply cannot expand. A seamstress turns to high-interest rate credit cards and becomes burdened with debt. A daycare provider closes her doors because she could not afford to market her services.
These are examples of the estimated 10 million individuals that cannot access affordable small business capital in the U.S., leading to missed opportunities for job creation and rich markets for predatory lending practices.
Direct beneficiaries per year: The business survival rate among AUSA clients is 98% for established businesses and 89% for start-up businesses.
Geographic areas served: Florida, Georgia, Boston, New York - and nationwide
Programs: Microloan Program for small businesses $500-$50,000

I have worked at ACCION USA as a volunteer for 4 months and I think it is an incredible organization! To me, the work ACCION USA does helps democratize our economy by offering credit to small business owners who otherwise would not be able to get a loan. In addition, there is a ripple effect as the business creates jobs in the local community.
