education - adc sponsors three public schools that serve children and youth ages three to eighteen and their families. Abyssinian headstart is an award-winning pre-school, thurgood marshall academy lower school is an elementary school and thurgood marshall academy for learning and social change is a middle and high school. The state-of-the-art facilitate that houses tma was opened in 2004 and was the first high school built in harlem in half a century. Education programming and supplemental youth development programming also include expanded learning time, summer enrichment activities, college prep, mentorship, leadership development and cultural activities - program activities engage parents and families. Abyssinian headstart is a comprehensive early childhood program that services 127 children ages 3-5 and their families, 90% of whom are below the federal poverty level. The goals of the headstart program are reflective of the national head start performance standards to support children and families as they prepare for entry into kindergarten; the program offers quality early childhood education in-class and at-home activities designed to foster the cognitive, social emotional and physical growth and development of young children and to increase parental participation through facility and community engagement.
youth build - adc's workforce development unit gives harlem young adults the skills and resources needed to increase their economic self-sufficiency and become competitive applicant's in today's job market. Adc workforce development unit consists of youthbuild and literacy build. Adc youthbuild program assists out of school harlem youth between the ages of 17-24 with obtaining a ged and critical hands-on job training in the construction field through a rigorous 10-month program. The program serves more than 40 young people with 63% of participants graduating from the program. Adc literacy build is designed for harlem young adults who have not graduated from high school and do not yet meet the requirements to enroll in ged classes. In an intimate class setting, the participants work toward removing the obstacles that are preventing them from enmbarking on a path to self-sufficiency. The literacy build program provides pre-ged pre and soft-skills training. The three main goals of literacy build are:1) to increase literacy levels in reading, writing, math and technology;2) to increase employability and 3) to increase the personal development of young adults and adults from harlem.
