RAINBOW RUMPUS
July 4, 2009

Rainbow Rumpus is the mirror that reflects the lives of children of LGBT families. I have been volunteering for Rainbow Rumpus for three years now, and what keeps me coming back month after month to work on each new issue is above all the heart-felt thanks we get from kids and young adults for producing media that reflects their lives. The magazine also has a simply amazing group of managers, volunteers and board members. Not only is the organization a unique and vital resource for our target audience, it's also a useful tool for straight parents who want to teach their children about diversity. Whether it's talking to your kids about what transgender means, or simply showing them that other families have two dads or two moms, Rainbow Rumpus has stories that illustrate and validate a myriad of life styles that very rarely are addressed in traditional media. As an ally who hopes someday to have children of her own, I look forward to reading these great stories to my kids.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The feed back that we here from children, young adults and parents.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Likely run it much the same. The organization is managed very well. There would probably be more cupcakes though, TBH.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Hearing about how important this resource is. Also, watching the reach of the organization expand from the United States, to all over the English speaking world with volunteers from Liberia, and writers from New Zealand and Australia.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Simply amazing. Everyone's committed to the mission, and they're fun to work with.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Oh, the things we could do! For one we could complete the redesign to our site, and then begin hiring full time staff, which would allow us to expand our content and reach. Publishing in languages including Spanish is a goal of ours.

Ways to make it better...

I had more time in the day, honestly. That's the trouble with putting together what is very much a full-time operation on a part-time volunteer basis.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Firstly, the economy. Foundation money is getting harder to come by. Secondly, the perception that we are not a nonprofit. Due I think because of how professional our content is many mistake us for a for-profit operation.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This organization is unique gem. It really is. It is the only of its kind, and the media its producing is outstanding. It's my hope that Rainbow Rumpus can grow its donor base and expand during this tough economy.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
