Review for Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I went to one of the fundraising socials and met one of the program directors and was thoroughly impressed. He spent over an hour answering my questions and I learned so much - from federal and California energy policies to Eco-tourism, to home energy audits. Thoroughly knowledgeable and passonate staff!

Rating: 5 stars

This review is for Worth A Dam, Martinez Beavers. Our family was given a highly educational tour of the creek area in downtown Martinez where a family of beavers live. We saw the Willow replanting and learned about flow device used to manage the beavers' dam. We can't wait to come back again and hopefully see the beavers out next time!

Review for CITY LIGHTS PERFORMANCE GROUP OF SAN JOSE INC, San Jose, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I attended a performance at this theater and met a board member, hard-working volunteers who were there to greet us and saw an outstanding play. Very talented performers. People were super friendly and engaging. This is a wonderful community theater!

Review for CASA of San Mateo County, San Mateo, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've talked to the staff at this nonprofit and really been inspired by their dedication to helping neglected and abused children. CASA matches volunteers with foster kids and provides a lot of training and support to help the volunteers be successful. Volunteers stay engaged for many years with their foster child. One of my friends volunteered for years and loved it.

Review for At The Crossroads, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've seen how hard the staff here work to raise money and to provide services to the hardest to reach youths in San Francisco. They leverage volunteers, product donations and do a lot with what they have. Their staff are caring and passionate about helping youths on the street.

Review for Harvard Museum of Natural History, Cambridge, MA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

This is a terrific museum that will please everyone in your family. There's dinosaur bones, an enormous beetle collection, and plenty of large stuffed animals. And yet it's pretty compact so your kids aren't exhausted from having to walk around a huge museum. Informative explanations, easy coat/bag check, and it's very close to Harvard yard.

Review for MARINE MAMMAL CENTER, Sausalito, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

We watched the National Geographic episode about this center and then came to visit. We did the docent led tour of the facility and learned about the different kinds of seals, how they get rescued, how they receive medical treatment, how "fish milk shakes" are prepared for them and how they are released. We were impressed by the educational and environmental mission of this organization at work. The volunteer docent was informed and inspiring, and was engaging for all the members of my family on the tour.

Review for WANDA, Women's Achievement Network and Development Alliance, a fiscally sponsored project of Women's Foundation of California, Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I attended a WANDA event and met some of the single mothers in the program. I was really impressed by the determination of these women and what they said about how the program helped them to save money towards building assets and make important personal connections. WANDA also has very smart and passionate group of volunteers who are dedicated to helping the program participants succeed.

Review for TechSoup Global, San Francisco, CA, USA

We get our Microsoft and Adobe products through TechSoup. Love it! It saves us a lot of money that can be spent now on our programs.

Role:  Client Served & Applied for and received software product donations.

Review for Opportunity Fund, San Jose, CA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

Opportunity Fund is a truly innovative organization that is dedicated to phenomenal results for the low-income clients they serve. They did a 2 year longitudinal study following the people who graduated from their savings program. 75% of program graduates continue to save today — saving an average of 10% of their annual income. Equally exciting, 70% of those savers had opened savings accounts for their children, pointing towards a generational change in financial knowledge.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I read the research about their work. I have sent interns to them. .

Review for Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, San Jose, CA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

I toured the San Mateo warehouse and saw how the goods get processed and allocated to local nonprofits. I saw volunteers working to sort the produce. I heard about their efforts to get more fresh produce. Me and my kids went door to door to collect canned goods last winter.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

One time

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Donor & donated canned foods with my kids.

Review for Environmental Working Group, Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 4 stars

This organization seems to be raising public awareness and getting legislation passed to protect consumer and children's health. I use their safe cosmetics database all the time to look for shampoos, baby lotions, sunscreen, lipstick that are less toxic. I read about their research - such as the latest report on rocket fuel chemicals found in baby formulas - frequently in NYT and other major media. I am impressed by the depth and breadth of their work.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

How useful their research is, how accessible their website for safe cosmetics database is for looking up products, and how much advocacy work I see them doing to get our legislators to more carefully regulate consumer products

Ways to make it better...

I don't know. I am pretty happy with what I've seen of their work.

Review for LUCILE SALTER PACKARD CHILDRENS HOSPITAL AT STANFORD, Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 3 stars

Long waits for appointments for pediatric GI. Especially on Wednesdays because apparently those are urgent days and they can't stick as closely to appointment times. We waited 1.5 hours to be seen.

Ways to make it better...

If we were told ahead of time how long the wait could take. It's hard to wait for that long with a 10 month old baby in a small examination room.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2008

Role:  Client Served & waited for the doctor in pediatric GI office.

Review for Commonwealth Club of California St Francis Hotel, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've really enjoyed all the different programs they have. It's a rare place in San Francisco to get together and hear a great speaker and talk about public affairs or culture with other interesting people.

Ways to make it better...

Their "upcoming events" link on their website would load up properly.

Role:  Client Served & I attended their events.

Review for Compasspoint Nonprofit Services, Oakland, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am a local nonprofit executive and I use Compasspoint's services a lot. I always look forward to their conferences because they are super lively and fun and address a lot of issues that not a lot of other people are willing to talk about honestly in the sector. And they really mix it up and get speakers who are though leaders yet are willing to mingle, make jokes and debate with the audience. I also find their studies to be right on the money. Their Daring to Lead study which looked at leadership challenges facing nonprofit executive directors is practial and well-researched. I haven't yet attended any of their trainings yet, but I've sent my employees there and they've said they learned a lot.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the candor of the nonprofit and it's willingness to speak up to funders about difficult issues facing nonprofits

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

passionate and bright with a willingness to both help individual nonprofit professionals get all the practical training they need, as well as advocate on a national level for issues facing nonprofit professionals.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

be a national support system for nonprofit professionals and a voice for the nonprofit sector.

2008

Role:  Client Served & I attended their conferences and read their research.
