MARINE MAMMAL CENTER

We watched the National Geographic episode about this center and then came to visit. We did the docent led tour of the facility and learned about the different kinds of seals, how they get rescued, how they receive medical treatment, how "fish milk shakes" are prepared for them and how they are released. We were impressed by the educational and environmental mission of this organization at work. The volunteer docent was informed and inspiring, and was engaging for all the members of my family on the tour.

WANDA, Women's Achievement Network and Development Alliance, a fiscally sponsored project of Women's Foundation of California

I attended a WANDA event and met some of the single mothers in the program. I was really impressed by the determination of these women and what they said about how the program helped them to save money towards building assets and make important personal connections. WANDA also has very smart and passionate group of volunteers who are dedicated to helping the program participants succeed.

Opportunity Fund is a truly innovative organization that is dedicated to phenomenal results for the low-income clients they serve. They did a 2 year longitudinal study following the people who graduated from their savings program. 75% of program graduates continue to save today — saving an average of 10% of their annual income. Equally exciting, 70% of those savers had opened savings accounts for their children, pointing towards a generational change in financial knowledge.

I toured the San Mateo warehouse and saw how the goods get processed and allocated to local nonprofits. I saw volunteers working to sort the produce. I heard about their efforts to get more fresh produce. Me and my kids went door to door to collect canned goods last winter.

This organization seems to be raising public awareness and getting legislation passed to protect consumer and children's health. I use their safe cosmetics database all the time to look for shampoos, baby lotions, sunscreen, lipstick that are less toxic. I read about their research - such as the latest report on rocket fuel chemicals found in baby formulas - frequently in NYT and other major media. I am impressed by the depth and breadth of their work.

Long waits for appointments for pediatric GI. Especially on Wednesdays because apparently those are urgent days and they can't stick as closely to appointment times. We waited 1.5 hours to be seen.

If we were told ahead of time how long the wait could take. It's hard to wait for that long with a 10 month old baby in a small examination room.

Compasspoint Nonprofit Services

I am a local nonprofit executive and I use Compasspoint's services a lot. I always look forward to their conferences because they are super lively and fun and address a lot of issues that not a lot of other people are willing to talk about honestly in the sector. And they really mix it up and get speakers who are though leaders yet are willing to mingle, make jokes and debate with the audience.
I also find their studies to be right on the money. Their Daring to Lead study which looked at leadership challenges facing nonprofit executive directors is practial and well-researched.
I haven't yet attended any of their trainings yet, but I've sent my employees there and they've said they learned a lot.
