Young Women's Christian Assn. of El Paso Texas YWCA
November 30, 2010
The Transitional Living Center of the El Paso YWCA is doing yeoman's service in the field of homelessness. Currently housing about 141 women and children, it restores hope and dignity to women who often have nowhere to turn. In addition to helping women secure their future by providing English and GED classes, the TLC guides women back to school or work and ensures their stability before encouraging them to move into their own housing. This year, the children got special attention through new Scouting programs, a reading and tutoring service and a focused health/fitness plan.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
As a volunteer in the Scouting program, I've watched the numbers multiply and the kids go through new and exciting self-discovery that increases their confidence and self-esteem. I've also witnessed numerous women successfully completing GEDs, finding jobs and rediscovering their strength and passion for living. One friend left the shelter several years ago and worked her way up from a secretarial position to a supervisory role with the city that pays her a living wage and provides health care.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Expand the current facility to meet the burgeoning numbers of homeless in El Paso.
Volunteer & I volunteer as a board member to set the TLC budget and also serve on the advisory committee that oversees the TLC program. I also help with the Scouting programs for the children.
