Adopt A Family of Marin
November 29, 2010
I became involved with Adopt A Family of Marin 12 years ago when I moved back to the U.S. after living overseas for many years. It was important for me to feel a connection to our new community and to help other families as we raised our own. I was impressed with the direct impact that Adopt A Family makes in the lives of the families it serves, through both the financial assistance and the resource guidance the agency gives. The hope and real relief Adopt A Family provides for families in crisis is truly life saving. Each instance of Adopt A Family assistance is momentous and I am struck with the number of families who face illness and hardship alone. Adopt A Family steps in to truly become the family support missing in the stories like Carlos', a bus driver who could not work while he cared for his terminally ill wife and their two very young girls and Karen, a single mother and bank employee suffering from breast cancer who struggled to provide for her teenaged boys. All are earnest and hard-working families who fall on difficult times. It is not hard to sign on to the mission of Adopt A Family of Marin, but what makes it even easier is how well managed the agency is. The staff is highly trained, yet small, and completely committed to directing the highest percentage of funds towards the families. With my own family almost out of the nest now, I look forward to further dedicating myself to the mission of Adopt A Family -- to prevent homeless for families in my community and definitely to serve as a model to other communities as well.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
serving on the Board of Directors and observing the number of families served in our community -- this year Adopt A Family doubled the number of families supported by the agency.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I would broaden the support it receives from across the county of Marin.
