These guys put boots on the ground to get stuff done that's really needed. In my case, I helped them build a latrine at a high school in Jericho. This kind of thing is mundane, but vital, easy to overlook in our high tech environment.

This the group that does Consumer Reports, probably the major product testing group in the US. They also do outstanding work in advocacy for regular people in areas that really matter, like financial protection, and better rules regarding cell phones, that kind of thing.

TYO runs a good computer center in Nablus, in the West Bank, helping give people a voice, and helping them help themselves with everyday matters, like finding a job or getting a place to live. (My support is in turn supported by the US, Israeli, and Palestinian governments.)

Hey, these guys help us all out by fighting for online rights. Seriously, we're all under attack by bad actors, like the very day I write this, in Congress, regarding SOPA. It could kill any site with user generated content, like user review sites.

Review for San Francisco Women's Centers, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Hey, the SF Women's Centers provide a really good umbrella org and space for a whole bunch of efforts that help people. I'm particularly interested in and supportive of their community computer lab, which helps people connect to find their own voice, and to get everyday stuff done, like finding a job.

Inveneo is great at getting internet connectivity to places where it's really hard to get. They're very smart about using alternative forms of connection where infrastructure is minimal, and getting the job done. That includes areas like Haiti, Kenya, and the West Bank.

Review for Kiva.org: Loans that Change Lives, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've been working with Kiva and affiliate organizations, and they get the job done, helping build small business and create jobs. (I figure creating a job is one of the best things a person can do for another.) Specifically, I've made contributions including the West Bank and Detroit, that helps people out, and my loans are getting paid off quite well.

Rating: 5 stars

People want to help others, and that often means getting involved somehow with nonprofits. We want to find effective ones, and avoid the questionable ones.

It helps to find user reviews of nonprofits.

This review is self referential, in part, to get the word out better. GreatNonprofits does a really useful and good job, and more people need to hear about it.

Maybe it's not necessary to talk up the folks behind Wikipedia, people already know their importance and influence.

You might not know how hard they work to get it done right, including always trying to make it more accurate and how to prevent attacks and other problems.

In a sense, they're asking "what is truth" in conditions which can get real unfriendly at times.

Review for AARP Foundation, Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

These guys serve a very broad population that really needs a break, and they get the job done.

They're also expanding in areas that need help, like people who can't get out of the house easily, and who lack local friends and family.

I've recently participated in a brainstorming session with them, on the use of tech to help people who're isolated. It was impressive and serious, and will get more done.

Rating: 5 stars

Sunlight fosters a network of sites that start to bring accountability via transparency to government, Federal, state, and local.

The deal is ultimately to show where money comes from, who gets it, and who gets what in turn.

Sunlight is the big operator in this space, getting done more than anyone.

IAVA has been very effective in a number of areas, like getting better Federal legislation for vets, improving awareness and support for vets problems, and mutual support systems for vets.

This also includes real big areas like jobs for vets, which is perhaps the highest priority matter for veterans, and their spouses. They're arguably the most important support groups for recent vets.

Review for Free Press, Florence, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The folks at Free Press believe that there's still a place for community-based journalism and that's the work they are pushing forward every day.

Okay, you hear me talking "trust is the new black" and that power and influence will shift dramatically to the people and groups with the best reputations and largest networks. The power and influence landscape in 2020 will look very different from now.

I feel this applies to media, and that the media landscape at that point will reflect those flows of power and influence. Among news organizations, the successful survivors will be the ones that build a culture of trust, largely by checking facts, and not tolerating disinformation.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I helped spread the word about the importance of bottoms-up community-based journalism.

Review for Craigslist Foundation, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The folks at Craigslist Foundation are doing good work. It's a nonprofit that works to strengthen communities and neighborhoods.

I think we all need to work together to make things better for everyone: treat people like you want to be treated; and now and then, give the other person a break, like being your brother’s or sister’s keeper. That means finding ways to do it.

We’re a collaborative species, relying on each other to survive, and everyone needs to pitch in, now and then. CLF and their programs can help you do this.

Role:  Board Member & I helped establish CLF and promote their programs like Boot Camp and LikeMinded.

The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is one of the most trusted organizations in the US, having earned that trust and they continue to earn it. Review for WIKIMEDIA FOUNDATION INC, San Francisco, CA, USA

Review for Iraq And Afghanistan Veterans Of America Inc, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Hey, the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America get real stuff done for vets, like educational and medical benefits. On a daily basis, they support vets, and provide means for them to help each other out. If you're serious about supporting vets, this is one great way to do so.

Role:  Board Member & I helped IAVA connect to other likeminded vets groups.
