Crisis Center for South Suburbia
November 11, 2010
I was married for ten years to a man who treated me horribly. I blamed myself for the condition of our marriage and for his abusive behavior. I thought I was doing something to make him angry. When I tried to talk to him about his behavior, he would tell me I needed to learn to react to him differently - that there was nothing wrong with him, it was all my fault.
I was very confused, hurt, frustrated and angry when I first came to the Crisis Center for counseling. That was three years ago.
The Crisis Center taught me about the dynamics of domestic violence. They provided emotional support and helped me develop a safety plan of action. They helped me uncover the truth about what was really going on in my marriage. They helped me find me. I am free of the abusive situation that I lived in and I am learning how not to get into the same situation again. I am sure that God led me to the Crisis Center, because I prayed for help for many years.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My spirit is light and I am happy. There is laughter in my home again and my children do not hide under their beds anymore. They are happy kids with bright futures.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Increase the size of the shelter by adding another wing because when I was there, I heard them refuse women & children because the shelter was full. I would also increase their transitional housing and help with daycare for women trying to work.
Client Served & I received counseling and court advocacy services.
