TERRE HAUTE HUMANE SOCIETY
September 28, 2009

The Terre Haute Humane Society has effectively reduced euthanasia in the community by incorporating and being involved with several new programs in our community. These programs include: low-cost spay-neuter, free spay neuter for the parents of puppies or kittens taken in at the shelter. Most recently we have been involved with the community HOPE program which targets families on assistance by providing free spay/neuter for their pets. We have increased adoptions by joining with PetSmart Charities adoption center at PetSmart, monthly Mutts at the Mall adoption events, and other adoption events at community events as well as businesses. We have a weekly presentation on both local TV stations, and a weekly article in our newspaper, each showcasing an available animal for adoption.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The reduction of euthanasia from 84% in 2000 to less than 5% in 2008, while continuing to received an average of 3000 animals per year.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Like to see it take a step in a new direction and be more aggressive in helping the community with low-cost spay neuter. Unfortunately the current facility is limited.

More feedback

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Watching this non-profit grow from a place that was the end of the road for most animals, to a place that is the new beginning for most.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Knowledgeable and helpful, unfortunately space is limited in the facility.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Build a new and inviting facility, as the current facility is over 50 years old and painfully out of date.

Ways to make it better...

We could further educate the community in the need for spay & neuter as well as proper care for their pets.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of community understanding of the Humane Society role in the community, as they often think of it as the city "pound" when in fact it's a private organization.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I'm proud of the progress of this organization.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
