To inspire and educate visitors with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and worldwide biodiversity through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.

Geographic areas served:

Western Pennsylvania

The Conservatory designed and executed the new FamilyPass program beginning in 2008, designed to help the region’s underserved schoolchildren and their families embrace Phipps’ enriching and unforgettable experience by placing the garden back at the center of family life. In this two-part initiative, Phipps promotes the offer of field trip admission and transportation subsidy to schools in low-income communities through classroom outreach initiatives. After their field trips, each attending child receives a FamilyPass certificate redeemable for a complimentary group admission for up to two adults and two children. This innovative new element doubles the value of the initiative by allowing children an opportunity to share their new expertise with those closest to them, treating their parents and siblings to the wonders of the garden through a second visit to Phipps.

It is always a delightfully calm and soothing experience to visit Phipps. The lovely plantings and soothing atmosphere is so restful. It was enhanced even more by the musicians who played in the central indoor courtyard. We also enjoyed the cooking demonstration. It was a delightful surprise and tasty treat to have the delicious treats too. The whole evening was an exceptionally charming event that appealed to our many senses. Thank you for the wonderful Conservatory.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Education. I brought my third grade students to Phipps. They were amazed at seeing real fruit growing on the trees. It was also helpful for them to experience a real rain forest environment, and of course, they loved the butterfly room.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I love the environment. It is always a treat to see the different plantings and the wonderful displays.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

All the staff and volunteers are responsive, warm, and knowledgeable people.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Continue to bring amazing guest artists to display their works in the lovely gardens, and continue to educate the public in the wonderful plants of our planet.
