I was an intern last summer (2009) at PIH. I became a supporter of the organization several years ago upon reading a few of Paul Farmer's books. (I highly recommend "Infections and Inequalities".) In the past, I have volunteered and worked with several non-profit agencies in the U.S. but I can affirm this group of wonderfully talented people are among the best, if not the very best, in the field of health and social justice. Please find out more about them and I know you will become a strong supporter.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... above-all the most dedicated, talented and diverse group of individuals.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... those who destroy opportunities, both intentionally and unintentionally, for all individuals to overcome life conditions they would not accept for themselves, their families and their communities.

PIH truly lives up to their philosophy of 'whatever it takes'. This organization's response to Haiti's earthquake disaster has been quick, thorough, and steadfast. Within one week they had set up supply chains for all of their existing sites to deal with the massive influx of patients from Port-au-Prince. They also had coordinated with other organizations to set up a site in P-a-P at the General Hospital to triage patients who could not leave the city to find health care. Two weeks after the quake, PIH had sent 22 planes to Haiti filled with doctors, nurses, medical supplies, food, etc. Their Boston staff worked around the clock to coordinate this effort. And they are already starting to think about a long-term strategy. As for me, I'm on board to be a PIHer for life.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... The staff at PIH is amazing. They didcate a tremendous amount of their time and energy to making the lives of PIH's patients better. Their creativity has enabled them to grow tremendously and take on country-wide projects.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... PIH is facing a huge time of growth, following this earthquake. Maintaining their preferred approach of personalized contact with donors and supporters will be difficult with the massive influx of supporters of Haiti.

I lead an organization that helps children living with HIV/AIDS around the world. We have been working with Partners In Health formally for about 3 years as a funding partner and have been extremely pleased with the relationship. Their leadership is legendary, as are the locations where they seek to make a difference (and they do). We have no doubt that their expertise will play a significant role in the rescue and rebuilding efforts in Haiti.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the accountability and detail we are given on the work that our grants have supported and the dedication that the staff have to the locations they are based.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... make an enormous difference in health care services for people in underserved rural areas like Haiti and Rwanda.
Ways to make it better!
  • One thing I'd also say is that... PIH will be critical to the disaster relief efforts in Haiti. They are trained medical providers who have strong ties to the community and are well placed to lead the coordination efforts on the ground.

I have had the fortune of interacting with hundreds of non-governmental organizations through my role in health policy and philanthropy. PIH (who i have worked with for over 10 years) stands out as one of the premier organizations staying true to a social justice mission and offering a high social return on investment. While keeping a low overhead, PIH is able to deliver sustainable top-quality care in several countries around the world. I have witnessed their growth from a handful of staff to hundreds across the world. Their approach to equitable treatment, community involvement and global health policy change demonstrates their expertise and strategic long-term approach to alleviate poverty.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... their concrete measurements of success. Whether in terms of treatment outcome or social return on investment, PIH can demonstrate their value across the board.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... their ability to quickly learn what works/ what doesn't work and re-configure their programs accordingly. This approach makes them one of the "go to" organizations for learning how to manage infectious and chronic diseases in poor countries.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... humble and concrete thinkers and not just "do gooders." Each staff member puts service to the patient as their top priority.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... revolutionize health care in poor countries, beyond what it has already done in HIV and tuberculosis.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... want to see it work in more countries and scale-up at more rapid pace.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... financial, given the economic crises. There is certainly no shortage of talent in the organization.

Partners in Health has an extraordinary approach towards holistic healthcare through its programs and footprint in Haiti. PIH has in many ways transformed how healthcare is delivered in under-resourced settings with their clinical programs in Haiti. Importantly, PIH utilizes and supports local resources, recognizing the tremendous local talent at hand. PIH's outlook is long term and strategic, and the organization strives to recognize the dignity of each patient. It has been a privilege to support such a program over the years.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... healthy outcomes for millions of patients worldwide that have benefited from HIV treatment protocols developed by PIH in Haiti and Peru.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... their "preferential" approach to delivering superior health care to those without resources to access such services. Those most in need deserve the very best service - and PIH strives to provide that in the most challenging of environments.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Dedicated, driven, doers, who are passionate about their work and have joined PIH to build a fundamentally different and more inclusive approach to serving those most in need.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Change the way healthcare is delivered globally. They've already done it with new approaches towards providing HIV/AIDS therapy globally, and PIH has a broad agenda to tackle.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... A consistent source of unrestricted funding.
