I have been volunteering at North Hills Community Outreach for 12 years! Before that when I was employed I donated money to the organization but now I donate time. I consider everyone there my friend - staff and volunteers alike. When I was 5 my Father was shot in a hunting accident. I can remember receiving services from organizations like NHCO way back then. Food, Christmas presents, Easter baskets, etc. Now I am able to participate in this great organization giving back to others what I myself have received. Volunteers at NHCO tend to stay for the long term! I am so proud to be a part of North Hills Community Outreach.

NHCO is truly a vital organization in our Community. The organization provides a diverse range of services, to impact so many in need. I am fortunate to be a volunteer and speaker for NHCO, and when taking the organization's message to events and groups, inevitably receive positive and enthusiastic interest, and meet many individuals who've benefited from the wide variety of services. NHCO exemplifies "help up not a hand out". I'm grateful to have NHCO serving the needs of our community.

I am a frequent volunteer as an event participant and phone campaign caller for North Hills Community Outreach. My experiences brings me to appreciate the strong reputation NHCO has, and the important contributions NHCO makes on many levels in our Community. Inevitably, individuals I come in contact with at events or by phone express how they themselves or an acquaintance has directly benefited from NHCO services, either from the back to work services, Senior Services, the food pantry, coat drive, or the auto program. NHCO is a true, grass-roots organization, who's services have a real impact in areas of most pressing need - right here in our Community, every day.

I volunteer with NHCO on an irregular basis but hope to become a regular again soon. Over 30 years I have done volunteer work in various situations, including while posted in Barcelona. I can say unequivocally that NHCO has the most dedicated organization when it comes to utilizing volunteer workers. I always feel welcomed and appreciated. And I always feel that I am contributing, not just "adding to the COUNT" of volunteers.

I have been a volunteer at NHCO for many years, on and off, when my work schedule allows. I am drawn to this organization by the integrity, sincerity, compassion and kindness of those who work there every day to make our North Hills community a better place. They are very dedicated to help others in so many ways, whether it be to offer assistance financially, to help someone get food necessary for a family to survive, a warm coat in the winter time, a backpack for school children, or a shoulder to lean on at a tough time. I definitely have a better day after I leave there having only volunteered for a few hours. Can't imagine our community not having NHCO!!

I have been in community service all of my adult life. North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) Is hands down the absolute best organization with whom I have been associated. I volunteer in their Development Office....fund raising, meet and greet, and giving speeches..we serve the North Hills area of Pittsburgh, and we do an awesome job. It is truly a team approach, and there is NO distinction between paid staff and the volunteers, who number at 1300+. I thoroughly enjoy my time there, and always feel that my efforts are appreciated. We had a humble beginning in 1987 with less than a $65,000 budget, less than a handful of programs, and less than 25 volunteers. Today, we have a $2 Million+ budget, over 20 programs (six of which are United Way funded) and over 1300 volunteers! That's leadership and commitment to the good of our community. I am so proud to be associated with NHCO.

This is a great place to volunteer your time and talent. A great place for help for those in need. Staff and Volunteers take great pains to make it a welcoming place for those who come here for food and other assistance.
I have been a volunteer for 2 years now and I still look forward to going there and doing my bit part to make a difference in this effort. Without NHCO, I sometimes wonder how many people will go hungry! Last year when I volunteered for food distribution for Thanksgiving, it was an eye opener to see who all comes for needed assistance. My experience was extremely gratifying.

HI, im homeless, i have been for almost 2 years now. me and my husband and my best friend. you would think with the three of us we would be able to get a place to live, but after one year, we were able to get a car. a good car. its cold out again. witch sucks.... Back to the tent boys summer is over.... one day when i grow up, im going to be just happy with what I have. almost 2 years of homelessness, still not holding up signs... still working still homeless. If I thought any one really cared, I guess I would of left my name. but it takes alot more then just a volunteer to get the heck out of the cold into a home... of what your ideal of a home is any way. Im just glad Im in america, people wast a lot of good stuff...

When I retired, I immediately signed up as a volunteer for NHCO. The work they do in the community is amazing – from an organic garden to supplement the food banks to reaching out to seniors – and is done with such compassion. The only agenda of both staff and volunteers is to help people get back on their feet. All clients are treated with dignity and encouragement and many have come by at events to say that NHCO made a positive difference in their lives.

I have been a volunteer for over 20 years and I have seen North Hills Community Outreach grow to an organization that is needed in the community and works very hard to fill that need. Their sole purpose is to continue to provide services of food, utilities, cars, gardening, school supplies, legal assistance, spring baskets, clothing, as well as directing those who need help to other agencies when we can't help them directly, and the list goes on. They are very special.

I have been involved with NHCO for over 20 years. When I started there were only three employees working for the cause, Diane, current Director of Operations, being one of them. Now we have thirty and they all do such a great job. At each board meeting we learn of a new project to help those in need. All of the thirty employees and the many volunteers should be praised for all they do for those who have been helped by their efforts.

NHCO continues to serve people in need. This organization is limited only by the geographical boundaries and by the funding available. They use every possible means to meet the demands of food, shelter, jobs, legal aid, rides, and also school supplies, coats, spring baskets, thanksgiving meals, holiday toys and other gifts, etc. They network with other agencies to increase the scope of aid to those less fortunate.

North Hills Community Outreach has been a lifesaver for many in the North Hills of Pittsburgh for decades. They feed and clothe the poor, collect school supplies for students every fall, and provide numerous services for the unemployed, the newly poor, and the disabled. No other non-profit in my area provides the superb services for so many as NHCO.

When I bought a new car two years ago, I gave them my old car. When my cell phones are replaced, they use cell phones for abused women's safety. When they have a food drive, I donate. When they sell citrus each winter to raise money, I purchase it. This organization is surely one of the best in the country.

I have volunteered at North Hills Community Outreach for many years & see all of the good things that are done with food as well as monetary donations. They are truly one of the best "reach out" to the communities non profits that are in the north hills section of Pittsburgh, Pa. Their caring nature of all of the employees as well as the commitment of volunteers is heart warming. I have seen first hand all of the great things that they do when a need is there such as having free bus transportation for those that
can't afford bus fees; their faith in action program that gives rides by volunteers for seniors that need transportation to Drs. offices; having counselors to help men/women to interview well so that they can get a job and be self-sufficient; their Community Auto program that takes vehicles as donations & makes sure that they are ready for the road and if not, have some work done on the vehicle & sell the vehicle for a reasonable price to a person that needs transportation to get to a job or take their child to a doctor appointment and there are other programs too numerous to mention.

I am a volunteer at the Allison Park office for about a year and was amazed at the number of services offered by NHCO. The staff and volunteers I work with are very dedicated and concerned about their clients. I am so happy that I answered the call when volunteers were needed and look forward to the day of the week that I volunteer. Recently I worked the coat shop and it was heartwarming to watch the faces of people coming in for winter clothing and the graciousness of everyone working there helping and assisting the clients. What I love about NHCO, among other things, is that it helps people right in our own community who are struggling, often due to things out of their control, such as age or disability, or life interruptions that cause temporary needs (loss of job, accident, etc.). I try to support agencies with global impact but also love that NHCO is helping local folks who have lost their jobs, housing, etc. and need a helping hand. Whether through special projects, like Fall coats or Thanksgiving dinners or school supplies, or ongoing projects like utility assistance and the food pantries and employment resources, they do a fantastic job. I cannot speak more highly of NHCO!!

My sons were looking to get some service hours for a scout merit badge and they contacted NHCO. They went through orientation, which really helped them understand the work that NHCO does. They were most impressed that it was more than a handout and they loved the community garden idea. They both worked at the food bank for those initial service hours, but they also both went on to help more by doing their Eagle Scout projects for them. Everyone they met was so friendly and easy to work with.

It uses its resources in the most efficient and effective ways possible, to provide the most appropriate services to their clients. It is extremely creative in the numerous ways in which it approaches solutions to peoples' needs. The Community Auto program that takes donated cars, fixes them up and sells them at minimal cost to people/families who need a source of transportation is an example of how the NHCO understands the basics for helping people achieve independence and add quality to their lives--a car may allow someone to take a better job, and allow children to participate in extracurricular activities.

I have volunteered for the past year with the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry once a month at NHCO in Allison Park, PA. It has been a true highlight of my year to be able to personally interact with individuals who need a little extra help to feed their families. I am grateful to the NHCO staff for allowing me to spend time with these families and a way for me to "give back" to our local community. It is a joy to see the smile on their faces when we can provide fresh produce or dessert treats to them; they enjoy choosing from the many soups, vegetables and fruits available on the food pantry shelves. NHCO respects the dignity of each individual. I am very proud to serve as a volunteer for their Thanksgiving Food Drive and their fundraising "Dessert theater" as well as in the food pantry...in many ways, NHCO is a true beacon of hope and education for the entire community. At the time that I joined the Board of NHCO, I was on many Boards and involved in lots of community activities. I sought out NHCO (versus the reverse) because of their grass roots approach and neighbor to neighbor assistance. I live within the geographic footprint of NHCO and very much like the idea that the organization is helping my neighbors. While my family supports non-profits serving non-US folks with food and medical care, I also like supporting an organization that is helping other Pittsburghers with day to day issues like food, utilities, housing, jobs, transportation, etc.

It is a great organization that uses all donations-- money and in-kind-- to the maximum extent. Which means that if you donate to NHCO, you know every dollar is being stretched to the most. In 30 years in the business and non-profits communities, I have never seen an organization "work" in-kind donations the way NHCO does. It is a great tribute to the executive director and staff but means maximum help to people in our community.

I am proud to be on the NHCO Board.

NHCO is a wonderful organization of "people helping People" and a blessing to the community that it serves! The executive Director, staff and volunteers all work so hard to make sure that our neighbors in crisis and hardship are provided for and cared for with such dignity that many who are helped find a way to give back when things get better for them. The administration and staff are well qualified and are willing to go an extra mile to meet the needs of their consumers. As a volunteer I have had an excellent working relationship with everyone at NHCO. The resources at NHCO are extensive and a real asset to Pittsburgh! As an example, one of the exemplary programs at NHCO is, Community Auto. This transportation program has helped hundreds of people buy an automobile, thus helping people in need get to and from a job and becoming tax paying citizens with dignity. Community Auto is a program under NHCO. It sells reliable automobiles to low-income, working individuals and families. Individuals donate cars to Community Auto, which, in turn, repairs and inspects them and sells them for about one third less than what they would cost at a used car lot. It is a real win-win proposition. The donors receive the maximum tax deduction because their cars are resold to needy individuals, and the individuals purchase a more reliable vehicle for significantly less than they could through any other channel.

The two individuals responsible for the program, Jennifer Carr and Ed Holdcroft, and genrous, caring, understanding and supportive of the clients. The provide a wonderful service to the community and are great to work with!

North Hills Community Outreach is a Wonderful organization. Volunteering for the Senior program does so much for our community. Without NHCO and "Open your heart to a senior", there would be elderly people in our community without, transportation to Dr. Appts, grocery stores, or simple conveniences that we all take for granted....like being able to walk outside on your sidewalk without worrying about slipping in the snow...thanks to the snow removable volunteers from the NHCO.
Because of this organization, and all aspects of their community service, the North Hills of Pgh is much, much better off.

I have been involved in NHCO as a volunteer since 2003. I have served as a Board Member, and worked on Board committees. This organization has helped so many individuals and families in need in the northern Allegheny County area. I am so proud to be a part of this organization. I work with the staff and other volunteers. I have seen first hand how this organization works and how our clients are taken care of in a compassionate way. I have Co-chaired a fundraiser for the last five years and was able to raise funds that were directed to help with rental and utility assistance, caregiving for seniors and adults with physical disabilities, employment, food panty and more. Because we have strong Board members, a dynamic Exercutive Director and dedicated staff, NHCO is an organization that promotes a lot of good will in the community.

NHCO is the recipient of a number of my congregation's efforts in Faith in Action. Because we Unitarian Universalists (UUs) believe in the inherient worth and dignity of every person, we are active in community service and social action. NHCO is one of our chosen vehicles for living our beliefs. Many community causes ask for our help, compete for our volunteer time and we do contribute both to others, however, as an institution the Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills feels a strong community partnership with NHCO. We collect food for the pantry, wrap Christmas gifts at retailers, serve in the Oakmont concession stands of the Women's Open, donate our own classrooms for Open Your Heart to a Senior training, donate money to be used at our Bellwood Kids' Stuff Sale, donate baskets to Spring Share and Backpacks to Back to School projects.

In short we find that a portion of our mission and vision is realized by working with NHCO to help those in our larger community.

I hope that you and your group will join with us in this worthwhile enterprise. Thanks to you all. Lou Bartolomucci, President of the Board, UUCNH

I moved to New Hampshire from the North Hills many years ago, but have continued to donate to NHCO because I know that the money I give is leveraged by many wonderful volunteers and administered by an efficiently managed organization that is truly focused on "neighbor helping neighbor." I like knowing that the money I give stays in the North Hills community, where, sadly, due to circumstances beyond the control of many seeking help, there seems to be increasing need. I like the way NHCO offers services that empower people and help them get back on their feet. I was inspired to learn about a woman who donated family farm land, so organic produce can be grown to supplement packaged donations to the foodbank. Even when it seems like everything that can go wrong has, the staff here never lose hope and always find a way to help people get back on their feet. As an intern, I have helped with many of the programs NHCO offers. I am always astounded by the generosity and authenticity of the staff, volunteers, and donors. They always do the best they can for our neighbors who come in for assistance, going above and beyond their normal duties. Not only does NHCO ensure that people have their basic needs, but there are also programs for the “extras” in life. For example, at Thanksgiving they make sure there is a “turkey on every table,” distributing an entire Thanksgiving dinner- turkey and all- in addition what is typically given at the food pantry. In short, NHCO does amazing things to improve the lives of people living in poverty in the North Hills with dignity, compassion, and respect.

As I encouraged our people to be involved with our community, NHCO was an organization to which I could point them to share their gifts for ministry with people in need. As we looked for ways to share ministry monies we raised to help people, NHCO was one trusted place those funds could be offered. As we encountered people with multiple needs, there would be ways we could help, but also we would need to provide for needs beyond our congregation's abilities. North Hills Community Outreach is truly an organization of people helping people. NHCO strives to help people with the utmost dignity, without judgement. NHCO meets the many basic needs of people in crises, while also helping them to become self-sufficient in the long run. I have never met such a kind, caring, and selfless group of people, and I am truly honored to be a part of NHCO.

I had made a desparation call for help. The lady that answered my call was very understanding to my needs and we had made an appointment for a meeting. The lady I met with walked me through all my options and finally agreeing on a plan of action, she showed me there was a light at the end of the tunnel. That lady's name is Nicole M. Davis. Speaking from experience,I feel she is such a valuable assett to your organization and a Godsend ,along with your orginization,to me and my 20 yo pregnent daughter. My daughter and I would love to personally thank all of you who are committed to helping those in need but I do have a special feeling of gratitude to Nicole.(give her a raise or a day off). Already struggling as a family last year, when the economic situation got worse, my husband lost enough hours on his job to endanger our being able to maintain life in the area. We have had to make use of the food pantry for the past year and a half, when we used to be able to donate regularly. Unfortunately, the situation has also left our 3 year old son without proper health coverage (due to an error between the current and previous insurance companies). We were not expecting to be able to get him his life-saving medicine (he has just been diagnosed with severe asthma, which is not under control yet)and asked if they might also be able to assist us with the funds we lacked for to purchase his medicine. Thankfully, they were able to give us the difference between the funds we had and what we needed to get his medicine. This saved us an emergency room visit last night!, as his asthma gets worse whenever he plays/walks more than 30 yards/ or just about any other form of exercise. His pediatrician thinks it might clear up as he gets older, but for now it is severe enough to be life-threatening. May God Bless and Keep the great people of NHCO in his care at all times! AMEN!

The people here are Excellent! We have recently fallen on extremely difficult times, with multiple complications. They don't judge, nor do they make you feel ashamed like some other organizations, for needing help. We have a 2-yr.-old son which benefitted greatly from the Santa/ Toy Shop this Christmas. With their help and that of our local community, we were able to enjoy seeing his smile as "Santa" delivered his requested toys. Toys that three days later are still getting 12 hr/day use! They also helped us keep our utilities on when we were having trouble because of being victims of identity theft, death of my father/landlord, and my husband losing hours on his job. I hope everyone involved receives as many or more blessings as they give out every year. This mother has tears in her eyes of pure happiness seeing her son still happy with "Santa"'s presents. Presents that we would never have been able to get for him ourselves, we found from the generosity of those that donated to this wonderful organization. Thanks again and may the tradition of community continue even in these tough times.

I began volunteering for North Hills Community Outreach two years ago, after volunteering at different places for many years. I was looking for a new place to help, where my contributions would be respected and valued. A friend told me what a wonderful place the Outreach was, and how fun (yes, fun) it was to go there each week. I was hooked the first time I went. I work for the Operations department, so one of my responsibilities is helping with the enormous task of tracking the in-kind and financial donations. The most wonderful part of the job is that I get to see how unbelievably generous and kind our donors are! It is so uplifting to see such caring, especially in this day and age when so many people are struggling. I also cannot begin to explain how unique North Hills Community Outreach is as a volunteer organization. Not to take anything away from the staff, because they are truly amazing, but the volunteers and donors are really the lifeline of the Outreach. If you are considering volunteering, NHCO is the place! I don’t know if you’ve ever had the experience of volunteering somewhere and feeling as though you did not accomplish much or that you were not really appreciated. Maybe the job wasn’t explained clearly or you were asked to do something you weren’t comfortable with. There are so many diverse types of opportunities here that it’s easy to find something you’ll enjoy. Whether you want to help occasionally with one of the sharing projects, do computer work, answer phones, work in the food pantry, help with transportation or do one of the many other tasks available (way too many to list), you will feel wonderful about it afterward. It doesn’t have to be a weekly commitment either. Help at any time is greatly appreciated—it’s busy and there’s always something going on!

Words really don't describe what a wonderful organization this is. The staff is very knowledgeable, kind, respectful, and compassionate. I have received help in several different ways from the devoted staff and wonderful and supportive volunteers. The thing I like most about NHCO, is that even if they cannot help in one particular area, they will guide you to other resources, and at the VERY LEAST, restore your faith in the kindness of people, and even faith in yourself. My small family and I probably would not have made it through an extremely difficult time if it were not for their support, help and love. Most Sincerely, Michelle J.

This organization helps to provide people with the needed basics of living. It has a food pantry that is stocked with a wide variety of foods as well as the very necessary toiletries. It has annual coat give-aways. Special emphasis is on the holidays where extra food, gift cards to local food stores to help supplement the holiday meal, utility payments during Christmas time, and even toys and clothing for children for all holidays. It also provides resources where people are able to recieve bags of clothes for their children during the school year. As if all this is not enough, it even helps with special financial problems that may arise. NHCO also supervises the Family Savings Plan through the state where a person saves $2,000 and the state matches their savings. Perhaps the most to be remembered from all the help I have been fortunate to receive is how kind the people who run it, and their volunteers, have been to me. No one seems to judge nor view anyone requesting help as "less-than"; they simply want to help in any way they can. It's an awesome place.

North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) located in Millvale was there to help those devastated by the floods that nearly destroyed their community several years ago. NHCO has not yet tired in its quest to help those in need-- even old dogs! As I surfed the web I came across a wonderful volunteer, Maria Christina, via her link on the Animal Friends website trying to honor the dying wish of a transient woman Maria purposed to help. That wish was to keep "Midnight Blue", the dog owned by that transient,-- her one and only companion in life & the only soul that stayed faithfully by her side when everyone else shunned her-- alive. I saw Blue and he looked pitiful. Who'd adopt this near-death, depressed, underweight, lame, tumor-filled 14 year old? ME! I drove from Sewickley Heights to pick up Blue from a dear woman in the South Hills who had him for only 80 hours before realizing she couldn not keep him. I immmediately took Blue to Dr. Maro, my Holistic Vet up in Chippewa, where he had a full work up and holistic therapies and was found to be in fine shape even though he was about 110 in people years! Several days later and 24/7 at my side, Blue realized he wasn't going to move again and began to perk up. He had surgery and continues therapies and is now very active, very handsome, very funny, very much loved and very SPOILED! He travels with me to friends' houses and makes himself at-home and endearing. My expectations with NHCO & Animal Friends was FAR EXCEEDED!!! I wanted info and ended up with a love story. When NHCO gave its word it was kept and it met the needs of the community in ways that go beyond paperwork. Maria kept her promise to someone who died for something that can't even speak for itself. Who'd have ever noticed if NHCO gave the body of the transient woman to the coronor and put the dog down? Only Maria's own heart would know. That's why I know NHCO is a GREAT non-profit. At her own expense, Maria provided for Blue's care because his "first mom" trusted Maria would do so. Now Maria can say "mission accomplished" because Blue has a loving home, a wonderful Vet, lots of chewies, an oversized stuffed featherdown chair and blankie from which to watch TV while waiting for one of his homecooked meals to be served. He's my ol' boy and I know Blue knows I'm his new mommy. THANK YOU NHCO!

I heard about North Hills Community Outreach through my school, immediately contacted a staff member, and then began my work shortly after. Yes, I did see the results I was hoping for. I expected that I would help those members of the Pittsburgh community who are in need and so far I have done that. We collected items for food drives and also collected bicycles that we gave out for free to clients. Recently, we worked together with PALS, an organization that promotes clean communities and works to achieve that goal. My fellow employees and I worked hard to clean up the local creek in Millvale and dispose of trash and dangerous objects that were in the creek. Our next project is a cell phone drive in which we will collect old cell phones.

NHCO is everything that I expected and more. I came to know NHCO through a flier in the mail. Last year I applied for a job there as a Youth Leadership Coordinator. I was hired there. As a Youth Leadership Coordinator I help out around the Millvale NHCO office as well as participate and encourage others to participate in NHCO's Sharing Projects. The latest Project that I worked on involved bicycles. We had a lot of repaired bikes, and we would fit a person properly to a bike. We would then give them information on repairing and maintaining their bike. Also, if their kids did not have a helmet, we had gift cards that they could buy a helmet with. I haven't met a person at NHCO who isn't caring and devoted to their job, NHCO, and most importantly, families who are in need of NHCO. Everyone who works here is very positive and nice. The facilities at the NHCO office are very nice for a Non Profit Organization. They have a pantry of emergency food for any family who is in instant need of food. Nothing is run down or unkempt. NHCO also has a great community center underneath of it's office. This community center is a great place in which they hold many events in. Overall, NHCO is a great place that I have had the pleasure of working for, and I strongly encourage anyone who is looking for a great volunteer experience to volunteer or work for NHCO.

I had volunteered for NHCO in the past with various school and community services, but in January of 2008 I was hired as a youth leadership coordinator for the Millvale location. One of the first things I learned about the organization is that they have several locations including but not limited to: Allison Park, Millvale, etc.; making the organiztion more available to those who do not have transportation or have limited transportation. Unlike most organizations that I have helped with in the past, I discovered within my first few days of working here that NHCO exclusively helps those in need in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh but will help other places if need be. NHCO can address a variety of issues in a person's life including spiritual, emotional, physical, and material needs. While NHCO will provide emergency assistance such as emergency food or emergency rent payment, NHCO works with the people in need to become and stay self-sufficient in their daily lives thru a diverse selection of programs such as community auto, a family savings account, and so much more. As part of my job, I run and maintain collection drives in the local area at places such as my school district and my church. A nice thing about these drive is that there is no age limit on collecting items. I have involved children as young as the elementary-school age level and have involved senior citizens from my church. Since my time working here, I have personally participated in the Souper Bowl Drvie, the Spring Share collection, and the Bike Shop; all which had great success. I would recommend the services of this organization to anyone in need because of the diversity of their programs.

Also, this organization does not only provide emergency assistance in times of crisis, but it helps people to help themselves and get their lives on track and really gives them the opportunity to be more independent and self sufficient. nhco has literally been a lifesaver for me. I would be homeless if it were not for their help & the help of generous donors. I had fallen on hard times, had to quit my job because of various health problems. I am now waiting on word from social security disability(which is a nightmare). In the meantime i applied for welfare & the little amount of money I get from welfare doesn't cover my mortgage. I had gotten a forclosure notice from my mortgage company & nhco saved me from forclose. They gave me help with utilities-who to call, help with filling out paperwork-everything. I also recieve food every month(excellent selection),clothing, toys for the kids for Christmas, gift certificates for meals for Thanksgiving plus extra food. I have also gotten a lot of emotional support from them. I felt very welcomed the first time I went there. They didn't make me feel like I was just there for a handout. We have been through floods in the Pine Creek area and Millvale. Those disasters taught us so much about what our mission should be and that is what we do. I am currently in my second term as a North Hills Community Outreach Board member. It’s a great organization with an outstanding staff! Fay Morgan, the ED, as well as the staff and volunteers, make sure that our mission is continued. Our mission is to make sure no one is cold, hungry, or forgotten. We continue to serve thousands of families experiencing hardships on a daily basis. Many are not aware that NHCO was founded as a direct result of the devastating flood in Etna in 1987. It’s hard to believe that same hardship was repeated with Ivan and Katrina. Over the past 20 years, (We just celebrated our 20th year in existence!) NHCO has grown and expanded their mission to include many different outreach programs.

I'm in my fourth term as a Board member of NHCO, having had to take a year's leave after the second term. Because I hear and observe the needs of the North Hills community, I collect food and coats and participate in as many fund-raisers as I can. Although I don't have direct contact with the recipients, I hear how appreciative they are of the quality of the service and the dignified manner in which it is offered. For example, instead of buying Christmas toys for the children of families in need, we collect money to help pay for their heat and light and allow them the dignity to make their own purchases for their children's holiday's gifts! I've observed our executive director develop NHCO from a staff of about eight employees to a wonderful, caring staff of about 25! The Board is very proud of the way she represents us to individual donors, corporations, and foundations. She is terrific!

As a former congressional staffer specializing in economic development and specifically working with Pittsburgh's non-profit community I witnessed NHCO's operating efficiencies and their sound business model. No bells, no whistles, no huge salaries or administrative expenses; NHCO defines “full-service” and embellishes it with efficiency and seven pounds of caring. Over 6300 services were delivered last year. But that doesn’t really reflect the truth. NHCO’s motto of “People Helping People” defines what really happens through services. Individuals receive not only assistance for their immediate situation but often learn to better themselves and their lives for the future. That, to quote my teenagers, “Is WAY COOL.”

Need help?
