Reviews for Arts Council Of Windham County Inc

Rating: 5 stars

The Arts Council of Windham County serves as an umbrella organization for a variety of arts entities in the Windham County, Vermont area — including Gallery Walk, the first (and best!) downtown First-Friday gallery event in Vermont; Art in the Neighborhood, bringing art to underserved parts of the community; the Art of Breastfeeding; and many other projects.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the form of Gallery Walk and other community arts events.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give it enough money to hire an executive director so it could be even more effective in keeping Brattleboro one of the best Arts Towns in the country.

Back in 2001, the Arts Council of Windham County procured a grant to fund a year of my services as promotional coordinator of Brattleboro's monthly first-Friday Gallery Walk, a community project for which they had assumed responsibility when its founder moved away. I expanded venue dues and advertising revenue for the project to become generally self-sufficient, but the Council's ongoing commitment and advocacy has been a vital support, too.

I have participated in gatherings the Council organized to explore the needs of artists and arts organizations in the area. I served as a board member in the early 1990s and helped with other Council publications: a quarterly journal celebrating area arts and a calendar of events and other arty resources published each season. I have also assisted with promotional materials for their long-running annual Student Art Month and Arts & Humanities Month celebrations.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The Council has been in the habit of regularly reexamining its role in the community and changing its focus and its efforts in response to what they find most needful -- no small feat with so many strong and self-directed arts organizations in their purview.
