I cant thank this organization enough for their help while my husband was battling kidney disease. My husband , Jerry, was on dialysis for 2 1/2 years and couldnt work so his health insurance was Medicare only with a supplemental but it was expensive for us. I work 2 jobs so it was difficult to pay. His center told us about the AKF and all our worries were washed away. His premiums were religiously paid every month for the whole time he was on dialysis and I cant thank them enough. When he passed, I asked friends and family to please please make donations to the AKF so they can keep doing the great work they do for so many people.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

while my husband was on dialysis, the AKF paid his insurance premiums religiously every month.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make more people aware of it inside the dialysis centers. My husband tried a second center and they never told us about this organization. He wound up going back to his original center.

How did you find this group?

from my husbands dialysis center's social worker at the time, Renal Center of Passaic, Clifton, NJ

What, if any, change in your life has this group encouraged?

I had my husband longer and the financial worries of his illness were taken away by their help. He worried so much for our financial future because of his illness. He was a volunteer firefighter so he wasnt used to worrying about himself and this organization made it possible for him to enjoy his life.

The American Kidney Fund aims to reduce kidney disease through public awareness campaigns, free health screenings, health education materials and courses.

I am impressed that 97cents of every dollar spent by AKF goes directly to programs and services.

AKF is great. They provided much needed help to many patients with kidney disease. Patients on dialysis face many challenges and financial assistance can go a long away.

AKF also support young researchers to help find better ways to treat kidney disease.

My son has chronic renal disease. I donated my kidney to him in December of 2010. This organization provides accurate information for both the donor and recipient.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

learning about laws associated with donating a kidney. Education on medications and costs associated with antirejection medications. I have contacted my congresswoman regarding the fact that medicare does not cover the medications after 3 years and that can mean that some recipients cannot afford the meds and can go into rejection. I asked for antirejection meds to be covered for a lifetime.

Do more to increase awareness of this organization.

I am proud to be associated with this phenomenal non-profit organization. The AKF is one of the most charitable and efficient organizations I know. To prove this point, in 2010, 97 cents out of every dollar raised by the AKF was spent directly on patient services and programs. These programs reach, help and educate, thousands of American individuals with kidney disease, including the most vulnerable patients, ie: the poor, minorities, those with limited English proficiency. These patients have a particularly high risk of experiencing adverse health outcomes while on dialysis and are in most need of outreach and education. The AKF fills this health care gap, among others. I can't say enough positive things about this organization.

I am currently an AKF Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellow. Thus I am directly benefiting from this organization's goal to develop young physicians into independent, high-caliber clinical researchers who can and will improve the overall health of kidney patients worldwide.

I have been particularly impressed with this organization's focus on kidney awareness and education. I strongly believe that education is the starting point for any change and improvement, and therefore would recommend that the AKF perform additional kidney awareness events and screenings.

I am a reciepient of research and salary support from the American Kidney Fund (AKF). This support helped me to develop research skills, accumulate a publication record, and apply and secure funding from the National Institure of Health. Thus, as it did for many others, the AKF helped me launch my research career.

The organization also provides numerous resources for patients. I have reviewed their education brochures for the organization and have been impressed by their commitment to patient education and constant motivation to try to increase health literacy in patients with kidney disease.

My advocacy has been pretty much on my own since I have never received the information concerning becoming an advocate. I am a recipient of the wonderfull help that AKF offers and appreciate it more than words can express. I want to get others involved in the charity both on a giving end and receiving end. I love the website and visit it everyday. I try to respond to others who are beginning dialysis and those who have just been diagnosed. It would be very helpful to have other guidlines to follow in order to be a good advocate for AKF. More help along those lines would be much appreciated.

The Mississippi area has an enormous population that suffers from kidney disease. More than 100 of our friends and neighbors in the Grenada area have kidney disease. More than 75 are on dialysis, and 50 are waiting for a kidney transplant. The reason for supporting the kidney foundation is to help support research, direct aid to kidney patients, and vital kidney disease screening programs. My 11 year old daughter is a survival of the kidney disease. I have 13 years of health care experience I worked as a certified nursing assistant.. I am a single mom. I am 32 July 1 st I will be 33 and it is also the day I received a call stating that they have a donor for my daughter..My whole life changed at that point so I would like to be a advocate.
