I was inspired to quilt by a dear friend. That friend developed Alzheimers and lost her ability to quilt. After 9 years she has now lost her battle with the disease as well. Her husband was a wonderful caretaker but this disease is devasting. The Alzheimers Art Quilt Initiative is the perfect way from me to honor my friend's memory and support research so others do not have to suffer the way my friends did. All of the people associated with AAQI have been wonderful to work with. Ami Simms is an inspiration.

One of my dear friends who is a quilter has Alzheimer's. It has been so sad to see her lose the ability to quilt as the disease progresses. So, I quilt to honor her and to honor all the caregivers who experience the lost of a loved one in this insideous way. AAQI is an incredible organization, let by the incomporable Ami Simms and a great team. If their enthusiasm alone could find a cure for Alzheimer's, we would have it.

I wouldn't change the organization at all. I want them to get millions of dollars so they can keep doing good work and find a cure.
The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative is a fantastic, growing non-profit that uses the power of quilters and quilt collectors to fund Alzheimer's Disease research. Volunteer run, the organization keeps growing and adapting to help raise more dollars for research. I always know that the money or quilts I donate will used for a great cause. I was delighted to have a quilt in the first traveling exhibition. Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece depicted stories of families, caregivers and loved ones affected by the disease and moved all who experienced the exhibit.

Not only is this volunteer organization successful in raising money for Alzheimer's Disease research, it educates and raises public awareness of this devastating disease through it's traveling art exhibits. I recently saw their "From Heartbreak to Hope" quilt exhibit in Portland, OR and saw and felt the impact this illness has on people's lives, not only from the Artist's Statement, but also from the comments of others viewing the exhibit. Just as cancer was referred to as the "C" word in the past, Alzheimer's today is often the "A" word. People are often afraid to talk about it openly. AAQI gives names and voices to those impacted by this illness.

AAQI is in it's sixth year and has raised over $690,000.00 for research. They have had over 9,000 quilts donated for auctions and sale. For a lttle grassroots organization started by Ami Sims because her mother had this insidious disease, we have come a very long way with not end in sight!!

For those of us who have lost a loved one to Alzheimer's the AAQI is very near and dear to our hearts. Alzheimer's is a vicious disease that robs the individual of his or her very essence one memory at a time. It is scary and devastating to the one afflicted and heart breaking to the family and friends. AAQI makes making a difference so easy. You can make or buy or make and buy! a priority quilt to raise funds for research into this insidious disease. Anyone can help. It doesn't take a lot of time or a lot of money, just a desire to make a difference. I think it's one of the most effective non-profits I've ever known about.

I have made a committment to make priority quilts for the Ahlzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative because I believe that money for reseach is the answer to finding a cure for this dreadful disease. It takes life away but leaves a shell of a person. We should all get behind this cause to find a cure in our lifetime.

The Alzheimers Art Quilt Initiative is a great nonprofit. I am impressed that there are NO administrative costs. I have seen families torn apart by the onset of Ahzheimer's disease and I want to do all I can to help this organization find a cure. If everyone helps, this is absolutely within our control. Let's make it happen.

My mom's name is listed among the many names. She taught me to sew many years ago. She struggles to quilt now...but she still loves it. I am thankful for all the quilters who encourage her. I am honored to participate in this initiative.

I am so happy to have found a way to help raise money for Alzheimer's thru this fabulous organization. I lost my mother-in-law to this devastating disease, and swore that somehow, someway I would find a way to help find a cure. Recently, I found the Alzheimers Art Quilt Initiative, and I am so happy that as a quilter, I can now help this organization raise money to find a cure, one stitch at a time. I was also so very impressed at how well this organization is run, with so very little money used for administrative purposes and the rest going to fund the research grants.

I suspect that every several people has someone in their family or someone they know who has Alzheimer's. It is really a heartbreaking illness, and creating quilts or donating to this good organization is a very healing thing to do, and hopefully one that will help others in the long run.
My Mother did not have Alzheimer's when she died, but she did have severe dementia. Dealing with her was horrible. One day she would seem semi-normal at least, but the very next day she would be so irrational that my brother and her felt like tearing our hair out. To make matters worse, my Dad might have had it some too, for he became very irrational about doing what was best for her well-being. I came to Texas where she was from California. She had open heart surgery shortly before I went there, and when my brother and I went to their home, we discovered my mom had not eaten hardly a thing for days, and my dad didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with that. He got angry that we were trying to get her to eat. He went to take a nap, and while he was asleep, she had a grand mal seizure and we had to call an ambulance. When he woke up, he was ready to try to kill both of us for sending her to the hospital. Total irrationality. Things just got worse and worse, and I ended up going back to California. She died after I left, and I really never got to tell her goodbye in a way that she understood or my dad understood. She never was rational again before she died. My dad died a year later and he really had pretty much become very irrational all the time. They were the only parents we had, and now they are gone and we never really got to say goodbye in a way that meant something.
Doing something for The Alzheimer's Initiative is just a small thing, but it is helping me a lot.

Just make it easier to find whom to send the quilts to and to get registered. It was hard to find that information and I still have not yet found the address.

When my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2002, I found myself suddenly in charge of her life. As the disease progressed, we placed her in an Alzheimer's facility, which turned out to be one of the best things we could have EVER done for her!
As a quilter, one of the speakers at our quilt guild meeting talked about the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, so I made a quilt and donated it - it was such a warm feeling. Since then, I have donated numerous quilts, one of which was accepted into the Heartbreak to Hope traveling exhibit. I have gotten others to make quilts to donate also and continue to do so. This organization proves that although we are not researchers, we can still be part of the solution. It is such a feeling of accomplishment that you truly ARE helping eliminate this horrible disease!!! Quilts helped bring the slaves from the South to the North, so it is only fitting that quilts can help bring this disease to an end!!! Thank you Ami for starting such a FABULOUS FABULOUS cause!!!!

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease, taking the memories and abilities of its victims and never allowing them to be ever again the person they once were. There must be a way to alleviate, or better yet cure, this condition, but it will take years of research and tons of money to fund it. Thanks to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, there is a way to help out in this cause. Quilters and quilt lovers, and there are many worldwide, are working together to raise funds. Ami Simms, the founder of the organization, has encouraged everyone to get involved in whatever way they are able. The endeavor has grown by leaps and bounds, since many of us have stories of family, friends and acquaintances who have been beaten down by the disease.

A lot of thought and work has gone into the organization to make it friendly and easy to work with. I am often unable to leave my home, but still I am able through the internet and my sewing to make an impact and help in the fight. I appreciate the careful use of the funds generated and the extreme dedication of a number of people who keep the group going and growing.

Really, no changes are required, we are working together with good leaders who are dedicated toward putting the funds raised into the hands of researchers who are working hard on the problem of the disease.
