Variety's Kids on the Go! Program provides wheelchairs and other mobility equipment, assistive technology devices and communication systems for children with mental and physical disabilities, ages 21 and under, residing in ten counties of southwestern Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland.
Children dependent on medical assistance, those who are uninsured but are outgrowing their equipment too fast, those with ancillary needs, unspecified diagnoses and syndromes, accident victims, medically fragile infants, and those whose parents are not covered by insurance, account for the largest segment of children whose needs are not being met through traditional health care systems.
Variety works to insure that these kids are provided with the equipment they need to be more independent. The task of finding the right equipment that not only is age appropriate but will accommodate the needs of a child with a disability – physical impairment, hearing impairment, blind or low vision, or developmental disabilities -- falls in the hands of parents who want nothing more than to help their children. This is the “niche” Variety fills in the community – taking on the challenge of finding the right equipment to match the varying abilities of each child with special needs.
Variety's Kids on the Go! Program is the only known program in southwestern Pennsylvania helping children with disabilities, who have fallen through the cracks for funding of mobility equipment or support.
