Mission: Our mission is to build a respected media foundation, creating high-quality films for worldwide broadcast and long-term educational campaigns that increase understanding and dialogue among the world''s spiritual and cultural traditions. Our vision is to be a catalyst for ending the "Clash of Civilizations." Part of that vision is a future where Islam and Muslims are understood in a wider, contemporary social context and Muslims are part of the modern social fabric.
Programs: 20,000 Dialogues is a nationwide initiative thatuses films to facilitate dialogue about Muslims and Islam. Why Muslims? Why Now?The misunderstandings between mainstream Americans and Muslims causeenormous challenges in our society. By enabling people to watch anddiscuss a film about Muslims, 20,000 Dialogues builds relationships across faiths, even at a time when current events cause tension.Research Documents Misunderstandings about MuslimsNews reports and research studies make Americans’ misunderstandings about Muslims—and the need for dialogue—quite clear: 48% of Americans hold an unfavourable opinion of Islam, the highest unfavourablity rating since 2001. ABC/Washington Post poll 2009 Unfamiliarity breeds skepticism: 53 percent of those who profess an understanding of some Islamic teachings view the religion favorably, compared with 31 percent of those who said they do not have that fluency. ABC/Washington Post poll 2009 Nearly three in 10, or 29 percent, said they see mainstream Islam as advocating violence against non-Muslims; although more, 58 percent, said it is a peaceful religion. ABC/Washington Post poll 2009Americans’ lack of familiarity with Muslims exacerbates theirsuspicions or questions about Muslims’ loyalty to the U.S. or their“religious extremism.”  In fact, 31% of Americans surveyed by Gallup in 2006 reported that they were not acquainted with a Muslim.  20,000 Dialogues Builds Understanding and FamiliarityThe 20,000 Dialogues idea is simple: watch a film and discuss it.  The goals of 20,000 Dialoguesare clear: build relationships, create a forum for sharing knowledgeand opinions, and encourage greater understanding. We hope thatdialogue participants will continue discussions on their own and worktogether to build relationships across faiths, even when peopledisagree.

The mission of UPF fits nicely into the new discursive of the twenty-first century. As we drift away from deeply rooted segregation and begin to understand about cultural others, diversity leads us to organize the kinds of efforts UPS champions. The multicultural products produced help a culturally recalcitrant and young America appreciate religious and cultural differences.

UPF doesn't just make award-winning films, they also have an array of tools – helpful guides, outreach workshops, models for dialogue, classroom materials, etc. – that extend the impact of those films for people seeking to advance cultural and inter-religious understanding. It is a leanly run outfit that helps people understand Muslims and Islam better.

UPF has an understanding of social change models and are offering intelligent and engaging educational programs that reach well into America's classrooms, Hollywood's backrooms, and even the corridors of policymakers, law enforcement, and the military. They stand alone in the field of interfaith relations.
